Honestly tho, I haven't come across REALLY bad headphone amps of recent manufacture. Can anyone name one that actually sounds bad enough for a reviewer to post "it sounds bad?"

Melos with Grados. Damn if that isn't synergy. But as said above, you need the right tubes. Fortunately, there's a tube out there for every preference so pop the one you like in the Melos and you're golden! Something about the STAX Lambda Pros with the amp it was twinned with - the SRM-1/MKII. Vintage rightness. KSC-35 with an Evilfire Cmoy. This combo beats some seriously more expensive portable rigs, no joke. It's all about synergy. Sony R10 with The Stealth. Brings the Bass, and an organic warmth the Sony R10 just doesn't have with other amps (including the Melos unfortunately) For some reason, the DT770 with that Channel Islands headphone amp - the VHP something? Oh well - it made that Beyer sound downright Reference.

Lan has one - i heard it in his rig at his place and it even made a 160AAC sound like butter. i like it. and that was using my modded DAC-ah too, and it wasn't even burned in, so i think part of the kudos must go to the transport as well.

i've been thinking about getting a cleaner transport - something like this or the linksys music bridge might be a good idea. the 0404 is still going strong but i'm paranoid about all the jittery stuff in my old Dell box.

Even when it gets personal, I try to ignore it. You never know where people are coming from, but why give them the satisfaction, right? People try to give me crap about things TOTALLY unrelated to headphones when I argue a headphone-related thing (usually they fall back on the fact that i'm a post count whore or spammer of some sort) but i take a "been there, done that" approach and just steamroller right over it and keep addressing only the points with merit - like, the fact that a portable amp is better off with less doodads on it.

you know at one point i tried to explain all the drama on head-fi to a newbie and at one point he stopped me and said "whatever, it had nothing to do with headphones." you know, that's kinda right. if it sounds good, enjoy it. if you bought a crap product, dump it. screw what's going on otherwise if you want to stay sane, i say!

blessing, you are comparing it to a scott nixon tube dac+? that's one of my fave DACs, it would be interesting to hear a full blown comparo to that and the lavry!
