  1. Went with that first board. It has a little bit of everything that good myrtle seems to offer - some flame, some curl and figure, and some striping. The finish will be a pore fill oil, which should really bring out the natural color and figure. Went with a Koa binding, and an abalone rosette with abalone fret markers. I went with a pair of luthiers from Oregon called covered bridge. Originally wanted mya-moe but the wait time is minimum 2 years. This should be maximum 12 weeks and getting heck of a value at $725 for a custom handcrafted uke using local Pacific Northwest wood.
  2. I am in the process of finalizing some wood choices for a custom ukulele to be built for me, and have settled on myrtle for the back and sides, and port orford cedar for the top. Both have excellent tonal and resonance properties, and both (at least on paper) offer the right combination of a heavier, denser hardwood for the back and sides, and something light but stiff for the top soundboard. Any guitar people out there can probably chime in, as well as any woodworkers. The builder has even sent me some pics of some wood choices he has available. I like the look of this particular one for its consistency and striping and overall lighter hue (see image2) However, take a look at the board below, especially the left half, with its extravagant and bold flame like curl (see image 1) Feel free to comment. Feel free to also share your experiences working with different woods, whether it be with speakers, instruments/guitars, or in general.
  3. Rant. iPhone went into recovery mode while trying to update to 8.1. Currently wired into iTunes and awaiting the recovery process...
  4. Jake shimabukuro gently weeps on iTunes. Sweet.
  5. Kind of off topic but somewhat related - any ukulele players out there? In my new position I teach 7th and 8th grade general music and guitar has been a big part of the curriculum in the past. Doing guitar with my 7th graders has been mostly successful but some of the physical obstacles have been frustrating for a lot of the kids. Their hands can be quite small at the age making stretching out to even the 3rd fret difficult. Chords like C and G look like they are impossible for some of the kids. I asked a local shop to loan me some ukes and God these things are so easy to play and jam out on, it's a lot of fun. Just seeing if anyone else out there has played with an uke before.
  6. Burgers. Used fresh ground sirloin and seasoned with bread crumb as binder. Too bad we finished all or bacon though
  7. This is such a newbie question, and I'm almost embarrassed to ask...but what our peoples preferred ways of preparing bacon? I've always been just a pan fry sort of guy but I'm sure there are better methods.
  8. I hear you bro. A while back I picked up a set of the older cornwalls and my wife said get those the fck outta here. They are freaking huge, like larger than me huge. But if you want "the bass" from a horn, you need size.
  9. I've heard the older heresys and agree with Jp. They actually are kind of bright sounding to my ears. I found you need to go as big as the cornwalls to get the bass you are looking for. The modern Cornwall 3's are definitely rockers but are huge.
  10. Pics or it didn't happen
  11. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/app-that-helps-kids-become-good-musicians This is pretty close to the heart. This guy is awesome and about as passionate and knowledgeable about spreading the love of music to all.
  12. Pics with headphone please
  13. On the contrary, I am very interested in seeing his slightly different but actually the same frequency chart
  14. Weeds! On season 7.
  15. Yup. Comes with built in ra 1 dac
  16. Grilled cheese panini with duck bacon. Sun dried tomatoes was an excellent choice.
  17. To me they are the best John Grado. The bass is insane and that is with bowls. Very clear and not as harsh as some of the thee Grados, doesn't sound as peaky
  18. I would trade my "improved" hp's for the ps1's - sounds fair enough
  19. Yeah! There was guy Martin Mckenzie who was kind of his go to guy who you would talk to and he would help you keep joe on track. Joe found out I was talking to him and scolded me for trying to go around him. However i did get my cans the next week.
  20. I might have been one of the last few to actually get the upgrade within reason and still be able to interact with him when he was still coherent. Even though he did snap at me one time. Lol
  21. You have a functional supra? Sweet.
  22. I'm digging it. Enough options there to keep me interested. Through the amazon music app it can also play off of your iTunes music library on the device
  23. OK - which was the better Headfi argument - pretzels vs churros or high school kid grinding advice thread?
  24. I concur. A nice refreshing change from some of the more "baroque" designs out there.
