  1. Is that what the independent place wants? Time for an iPhone 7.
  2. I would take it to an independent place, as it should be cheaper.
  3. The HDTracks version. That reminds me that I need to listen to the first pressing of both the Ellie and albums. I have that. I might have to listen to it, tonight. I remember riding around Las Vegas, in our rented convertible (I have no idea what it was; I was 5) with my mom, with that album blaring on the cassette deck.
  4. I almost always prefer to owe rather than receive a refund, as long as I know what it will be that I will owe.
  5. I have to say that, after listening to the "official non-official" version that I have, for over a week, it is better than the Shure Olive foamie mod. The Shure Olive comes close, especially if you already have some and don't want to spend the money, but, well, the "real" mod fixes the phones. Is this what the HD-800S sounds like? If so, it's what the HD-800 should have been from the beginning. Damn it sounds good.
  6. The Expanse's 2nd season sure made up for the first. I still need to read the newest book.
  7. Harlots. It kind of makes me think of The Knick, the way it's made.
  8. I like one and don't like the other. What else would you have me do? Keep in mind that only one of those phones cost $4000. I'd love for them to sell well; it's in my financial interest.
  9. I was just being a dick. And no, not 'nuff said. You guys realize that I don't really use the Extreme, right, because I pick up radio in my apartment, in the place where I would use it? I've mentioned that before. I had the meet today. I was honestly expecting people to love the Utopias, that maybe I was just weird, and I didn't really talk about them before people started listening, as I didn't want to poison the well. Amps included the KG reworked Squarewave XL, my nearly-maxed Headroom Desktop stack (just missing the SA) , a pretty well stacked DIY Dynalo (I guess these are all ill-suited amplifiers?), some other things, professional gear, that I can't remember, and the Extreme, and several sources. Other people's opinions were pretty much in line with mine. The audio engineers both agreed that they could never use the Focals to mix, as the compressed soundstage made instrument and voice separation very difficult to identify, and that placement would be difficult. The weird aggressive honk in the midrange was also mentioned, and audio engineer friend #1, Simon, asked me if I thought violins sounded like violas on them. He is an audio engineer at my old conservatory, and spends a lot of time listening to acoustic instruments. Strangely, the Extreme was what most people liked the the Utopia the best on, as the honk was less obvious (it also helped that it was hooked to the Electrocompaniet that I'm borrowing from Jim, which I think is excellent). Two peeps, JP and Simon, had previously not liked the HD-800 much, due to the mid-treble tizz, but the SuperDupont mod pretty much fixes that (after listening for the last few days, I definitely prefer the real mod to the Shure olives), and they were greatly preferred. Even HD-600s were preferred, because instrument placement was reasonably accurate, three-blobs be damned, and instruments sounded right. The RS-1s were enjoyed, though nobody thought they were accurate (which, of course, they aren't, but they sure get timbre right, for a lot of instruments), and they certainly have a neat way of placing instruments in space, even if the soundstage isn't very large. I felt quite vindicated. You can believe my report or not, I don't really give a shit. Thank you very much, Todd, for lending them to me. I hope that you like them as much as most people seem to. I was really expecting to. I'll get them back to you in the next couple days. To summarize, I really just don't get it. I think the Utopias are anti-hifi, measurements be damned. They make everything sound the same, and it can be pleasant (the punchy bass is great), but it's not accurate, and I can't hear the room where things were recorded, because there is such a compressed and weird soundstage. Being Mr. Empirical Evidence, it's a tough thing to say, but at the end of the day, I have to use my ears to listen to things. These are the world's best KSC-75.
  10. When did this forum become so anti-expertise? Are the powers that be going to suggest not using vaccines, next?
  11. Ok. I guess clarinets are supposed to sound like ducks. I wish I had known that, at conservatory. If you think you know more about woodwind timbre than I do, well, I applaud your musical career.
  12. I'm a big fan of the RS-1, HD-800 (modded more than not) and the Stax 007 and 009. I used to swear by the Grado HP-2.
  13. Arganese CL3. Very decent, after 9 years in my humidor. I got about three inches of ash, but that fell off while I was trying to take a pic, of course, so all I have is a pic after the first 15 minutes. 120 minute smoke.
  14. I would suggest taking it to a phone repair place, if you have one nearby. I think it likely needs a board replacement (and maybe a new home button), but that will be a lot less money than a new phone. The nice thing about having such an old phone is that you won't have to worry about also replacing a Touch ID sensor.
  15. That looks like a hell of a lot of fun, HemiSam!
  16. I'm disappointed with the Utopias. They are very good. That is the problem. Everything with them sounds very good. Nothing sounds great, and nothing sounds bad. Maybe I could have a better system for them, but a Capitole Mk II SE running to a maxed out SP Extreme with true NOS VT-231 and Tung Sol 5998 is about as good as I'm going to get. Thank you, Todd (skullguise), for letting me borrow your Utopias. I am very interested in what my friends think, on Sunday. It is a combo of audio engineers and music fans, and none of them pay much attention to me (they wouldn't be my friends, otherwise).
  17. That's really sad, Peter. You need to grow up. I've done it. If I can do it, you can too. Unless you want to give me a time out because you are wrong. Sure, no computer is invulnerable. The one in my alarm clock is awaiting its hacking. Any second now. You used to be worthy of respect, Peter, even when we disagreed. That was a while ago, I guess.
  18. Marketing isn't about being diplomatic. That's PR. Marketing is about turning flaws into strengths. You could learn a lot. A lot.
  19. I guess my opinion was just awful, and censored people who asked for advice. I find that article to be extremely conservative, but I'm censoring Dusty, so what the fuck do I know? I do it every fucking time. After all, there are hackers right now trying to break into Peter's sister's Mac, as we speak. We don't know there aren't! Other people have to go through me, too. That is the law.
  20. Give me a time out, Dusty. I'm sure that will prove you right. You're the big man now. Show me how I censor you, Jefe. Did you ever think that you are the censor? You sure hate it when you don't know something, but think you do. I have no power to "do it every single fucking time." I gave that power up when I fucked up. I just try to be helpful, these days, and try to not make my client look bad. I guess I failed there.
  21. There is no gambling, especially with any vaguely recent version of OS X. Then again, I'm an OS X and UNIX security expert, and I understand how this shit works. When MolGen brought me on, we quit losing proprietary protein models to the Chinese. I'm sure that was just a coincidence. I'm sorry that being ignorant makes you aggressive, Dusty. It's not attractive. I hate to say it, but I'm going to relegate you to Aardvark land. I didn't even relegate Aardvark there.* Sure, then you say "Me am programmer!" "You am programmer" means "you am security risk," in my experience. Major, major differences between being a programmer and being whatever the fuck I used to be. I'm a marketer, now, but I had 14 years of not being that. Break Gatekeeper, Peter. Come on, you are so smart, programmer. DO IT. Teaching users to think before plugging in their password fixes the vast, vast majority of issues in OS X. But come on. Break it. *Of course I'm not doing that, but ask Dan how much anti-virus software he runs on his Macs. I'm sure he runs lots and lots *nods head.* I'm sure you'll listen to him. Asshole.
  22. I didn't mean to be an asshole. Which is saying something, for me. I would suggest putting some up on eBay. I only bought from where I did because of my eBay coupon.
