  1. Happy Birthday Matt. Exercise all your rights, and wrongs!
  2. @Steve, sorry for your loss. @Brent, scary stuff. Glad it turned out OK in the end, but not something I'd wish on any parent. The above makes yesterdays minor inconvenience seem like small beans in the grand scheme of things. Yesterday at work, thanks to the efforts of some ne'er do well's (Thievery leaves 500 Larkspur, Corte Madera customers without phone, Internet service - Marin Independent Journal) we were without outside phone lines or internet access - the Horror! Progress was made however on our little island of technology, thanks to the lack of distractions/interruptions. A weekly conference call took on a slightly surreal aspect, with all the external parties on a webex, and our little group clustered around an iPhone on speaker mode. Later that evening Joanne and I went to along celebrate the engagement of a fellow Brit ex-pat to a local girl. I guess some people have gotten over the loss of the colonies Beer, BBQ and Live music (A local acoustic group of Dobro Slide Guitar, Fiddle, Double Bass, Drummer (brushes mostly) and Vocalist with Ukulele) - Some interesting arrangements of Brit and American tunes for the occasion. A good time was had by all; Helps that one of the organizers is a party planner.

  4. From the local library. Interesting read, but unlike the product, I found it somewhat unsatisfying. Check out the acknowledgements at the back, and see if you think that this is essentially an unauthorized biography, with all that entails. That said, I found out things I hadn't known before, and it explained some of the socio-economic context of their history. Now why do I feel a craving for a double-double animal style
  5. Toslink provides galvanic isolation. BNC (75ohms) provides best signal propagation. Better yet check if the BNC connection is transformer coupled to provide ground isolation.
  6. Peltier (The Heatsink Guide - Peltier cooler information) surely
  7. Aren't you still having the problem of a push protocol, rather than a pull protocol? You're still driving the Dac's clock from the transport clock (albeit on discrete lines)( = PUSH) , rather than using the DAC's clock, to clock data from the transport ( = PULL). Yes, you can buffer the data, but where's the flow control to prevent buffer overruns / underruns? Unless you then modify the dac's clock rate, in which case you have just re-invented wow and fluter in the digital domain
  8. Or better yet don't use a defective protocol that forces you to recover clock and data from the same signal.
  9. Maybe also its just a utility thing. Suppose someone has a computer without an s/pdif coax output, but does has a usb port. Suppose they have a Dac without usb input but with a s/pdif input. Suppose they are non technical and just want to play music from their computer on their Dac without installing additional software? A product such as the above meets the requirements. Now if you are getting someone to buy such a thing, how do you maximise your profit
  10. <pedant mode> You notice that it's not actually laying the track, as the Continuous welded rails are already in place, it's "merely" bending them out of the way while it removes the old sleepers, replaces them with new ones, and relays the ballast</pedant mode> Interesting nonetheless . Looks like its happening in Belgium. (based on the logo on one of the machines) (Infrabel, Belgian railway infrastructure manager) Rail tracks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  11. Some kind of cellphone touch screen, perhaps?
  12. Wait, You've attended meetings that discussed the deployment and employment of tactical thermonuclear devices? This explains so much about you lawyerly types
  13. or better yet (slightly NSFW audio at end) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s1MspmfEwg
  14. What about one of these?
  15. The joy about software based controls, is that you can use any platform to implement a client that understands your control protocol. So you are not tied to a specific device / platform. Unless you want to be. Different platforms have different feature sets that you can exploit. Dirty enough for you?
  16. Happy Birthday Tyll, Happy Trails.
