At that level of price I think you should try to get some extended time with both, nothing anyone here says will be able to account for you personal tastes and preferences and ultimately you need to decide for yourself as to which will suit you better. Having heard the 800 I would say personally I'd hit the O2 but that's just me.

all this is way above my head, but as someone who will, at most, run a stax box from it, what is the lowest these can be biased for purely headphone use? Gobs of power and massive quantities of heat are not required in my case. Is there a way of running this at a lower power spec which won't affect the sound?

Well, that's some serious sinking and exploding! Anyway, a project like this would be easy-peasy to -= =- and along the way she'd modify the design, replace various parts and make it moar better.

I'm gonna stick with the EHHA and CTH (if I can figure out why the hell it keeps tripping) until other things come up.

I'd like to say it's been fun but it really hasn't. And it's the new board that popped this time. No idea what or why and at this point I really don't care. It must be a special day because my CTH is also on the blink with the stupid E12 switching on and off every few minutes. Now I'm waiting for the EHHA to blow up to make my day complete.

Oh happy friggin day, I turned on the amp this morning and was instantly met with the smell of burning as yet another board goes pop. I'm officially calling it a day on the Beta. As nice as it sounds it's really not worth the time and frustration any longer.

I didn't find the 800 in the least bit offensive. They are fast, clear, detailed and very good overall. They don't seem colored and do indeed appear very neutral. Everything a purist might want. I've been fine tuning my tastes over the years to the extent of modding things to sound how I want and that is now what I like to hear. Unabashed personal coloration junkie. I have a specific sound sig I like and as well as the 800 performs, If they were mine I'd be in them modding to suit my tastes.

I think the 800 is ultimately too neutral sounding for me, I like my coloration and the 800 sounded nondescript and not very interesting or engaging to me. However, they are very memorable in the comfort department. I'd love a set as foster phones to transplant some orthos into hehe
