Yeah, if it's going to be a music server, then by all means, put an SSD in it. It's too bad you can't put an SSD front-end and still have a hard drive, so that the SSD is doing all the "heavy lifting", as it were. SSD + external hard drive? Strikes me as kludgy if he has to move files every time he wants to listen to something different.

The reasoning goes something like this: if you usually leave your AC in recycle mode, condensation accumulates -- if you leave it open, then it eventually evaporates, depriving the mildew of one of its key ingredients to live. Of course, if it's a dead fish behind your taillight, then all it does is waft relatively fresher air in your face.

Depends on the OS -- don't bother with 8 unless you're using a 64-bit OS. Also, quit multi-tasking? You don't need to watch porn and listen to music at the same time. And/or reinstall? Might be a lot of crap in the background that you're not using.

It's not so much that it's funny -- it's a sitcom, ferpete'ssake -- it's just that I can relate to a lot of the nerd humor. Plus, I love it when they go out of there way to get the math right on stuff. They actually have a consulting physics professor on the show to make sure that the nerd-speak is mostly somewhat realistic.

When you tried the 40, did you try the Mk1 or MkII? I seem to remember you trying the Mk1, make sure you give the MkII a try.

Stinkbugs. We got a small infestation of them at our place, too. The ventilation problem is an easy one to solve -- thought it takes a little time. Every time you park your car, turn the intake to outside (I.E. recycling off), turn the fan on full, and the temperature at the halfway point. Eventually it'll die and go away.

I find it impossible to do otherwise.

And for those times, you can get those external USB batteries that several of us have gotten for our iPods and whatnot. Something like the XPal Portable Li-Po Battery Pack (I think).

The thing is, no-one cares. Most producers/mixers/engineers/musicians tend to listen to the end product in a variety of environments to make sure it is at least listenable on most stereos, including a cheap car speaker with extremely limited frequency bandwidth. It's actually very possible to get very accurate sound-/head-stage with electronics (look up 'convolution reverb')...but most just shrug and say, "who cares?" It's more important to get it to sound nice in other areas -- for example, that 'wall of sound', or a nice separation of voice from the rest of the mix.

There's a lot of 2-channel jazz (I.E. Mapleshade) which images well on speakers. I'll have to look that up and read it later.

Actually, I think it's exactly the same, because all the tires usually say something about symmetry or directionality, but not necessarily both. EDIT: But I will admit, this confuses me:

Me neither, especially since most music is not targeted at headphones, so the concept of imaging is ludicrous with anything other than binaural recordings. So take anything I say within that context. What? No, quite the opposite, for good imaging, you want the most accurate, best stereo separation, yet best matching between channels that you can get. You definitely want clarity. But then again, I don't understand imaging on headphones in the way that people usually talk about it. It's easier for me to talk about separation and isolation of particular musical elements in the mix, etc.
