Nice. We're still using a 60" 720p rear projection LCD Panasonic from 2005. Can't see being able to upgrade for a while, but maybe after tax refund time in the spring. Please let us know later how you like this one.

Wayne Newton - really nice down to earth guy, was a friend of my grandmother (who would always get comped a room at Ceasars Palace). We visited his home once in 1984, he had lot's of peacocks (the bird kind). Allan Alda - polite and quiet, but shaking hands with him was like holding a limp fish. Yuck. I was taken to the set of MASH in 1979 by a friend of my grandmother who worked at the studio. Jaimie Farr - funny guy even off screen, strong handshake.

Clone your HD to a bootable external HD. Boot from external drive to test that it's good, because you may someday have to boot from it and use it if your computer HD dies. Shut down and boot from OSX installer DVD, wipe internal HD clean and install fresh OSX onto internal drive. It helps to have the external drive already plugged in so when OSX installer asks if you want to migrate from another computer you can say yes. Choose the external drive with your clone on it. (you can probably also do this with a time machine backup). If you select the right options it will then import all your apps and user data from the external drive, but not the old itunes or any old bad system software (as the fresh system install will have newer files it wont overwrite, just not always the newest version). When you reboot from the fresh internal HD, you should be okay to run "system update" to get everything back to the most recent version of the apps. Do this update BEFORE you try to run an old version of mail or itunes app that can't read the newer data files. (for instance, my OSX will install 10.6.0 and my data from the newer apps can't be opened until I update) -

Maybe you could into gmail from your web browser, and see if there is an unusually large email with attachment that you can delete from there. -
I think you still did pretty well with that combo, which is better than most portable rigs and can drive full size phones well too.

n3rdling, nice writeup. I posted similar impressions myself.

So, that means you did try creating a new library before plugging in a device? I'm still surprised the detailed removal of iTunes, followed by a fresh install didn't work. Maybe it's time to visit an Apple Genius Bar? -

What happens if you create a new iTunes Library and put a few songs in it, and then try to sync as a test? (if this works, your old library is hosed). You may be able to re-create your library by importing the iTunes Music Library.xml or iTunes Library.xml file into the new iTunes library, but you may have to drag all your music to the new library and make your playlists from scratch instead. -

You may have to do a more complete uninstall and reinstall. It's actually a fairly complicated process. I got this from Apple -> Before beginning, please back up your iTunes library as explained here: How to back up your media in iTunes How to back up your media in iTunes To uninstall iTunes, please follow the steps in this article: Removing iTunes for Mac OS X Removing iTunes for Mac OS X After you've uninstalled iTunes and removed the related files, you will need to reinstall it. You can download the latest version free of charge from the iTunes website: Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now After you've reinstalled iTunes, please ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime installed. You can find the latest version here: Apple - QuickTime - Download -
On a low budget I really like the Nuforce uDAC-2 24/96 USB DAC, with RCA line-out and RCA S/PDIF out. It's also powered by the USB port, and has a decent headphone out. The volume knob adjusts the RCA output levels, but you can just set the output level and leave it alone while it hides in the cabinet with the Mini.

The Duet is a nice DAC to pair with an amp, and it can do 24/96 via FireWire. But you wont be able to use it with a DVD or CDP and other digital sources (Wadia, Apple TV or Airport Express). I would also consider the Apogee mini-DAC (with firewire or USB) or a Stello DA100 for only a little higher budget. I haven't heard the Northstar so I can't comment on that one.

I use software from aTV Flash -- The Ultimate AppleTV Enhancement that allows plugging in a huge external USB drive to expand the Apple TV storage. I used a 500Gb external drive with my 30Gb Apple TV until the thing died after 3.5 years. I have not needed to install ATVFlash on my remaining 160Gb ATV, but it should work. Some places can simply install a bigger drive right inside the ATV if you want. I still have a working 160 Gb Apple TV and I'm okay with the amount of storage. You can get about 500 albums in Apple Lossless onto one. You can use the Apple TV 160Gb as a stand alone music and video player controlled by the little Apple remote, and the interface is easy to use. But you still have to use a computer with iTunes to load most of the content onto it, and also to back up movies and TV shows that you buy through the Apple TV. If you don't sync it with iTunes and you buy videos through the ATV, then if the ATV dies you can't retrieve your purchases. I have never tried to buy music on the Apple TV, and don't think it supports that. The newest Apple TV only streams music and video from a computer or the internet with no storage, which I think is a mistake. I might end up buying a second 160Gb model before they are all gone. You can use an iPod Touch or iPhone to control the Apple TV, so it can be used without a monitor or TV to serve music to your stereo system. The Squeezebox touch with USB hard drive still sounds like a reasonable alternative to the 160Gb Apple TV.

The HE-6 is less bright than the original HE-5, but brighter than the HE-5 LE - with treble on a similar level to the HD800 but without the 6K peak. Bass is a bit stronger than the HD800.
-
Neko also sells their own cable to connect the DAC to an SE amp. I actually bought a pair a while back, just in case I might need them someday.
-
He actually suggested 5-6 watts at 60 ohms, which might mean an amp that does about 50 watts @ 8 ohms. There was a big leap in performance moving from my 8-watt ZDT to my 55-watt Yamaha home theater receiver, and I did not need to get close to maxing out my receiver. If I listened to my Polk SDA speakers at -25 on the volume control, the HE-6 performed as well at similar volume levels with the same volume control settings (albeit 12 feet away for speakers and inches away for headphones). With the ZDT normal listening levels were achieved with the volume knob at 3 o'clock and I could listen at max 5 o'clock without distortion; but it sounded softer, less dynamic and less transparent than when using the cheaper but higher power receiver to drive them. They just didn't seem to do so well on a high-end low-power transformer coupled tube amp. The next prototype is already more efficient, and hopefully the final version will be noticeably easier to drive. On a similar note, I found that most 8-12 watt speaker amps were still insufficient for the K1000 as well.

Just to be clear, you want to keep your music and movies on your computer and stream them to the touch to watch or listen? I use StreamToMe from the app store, and it has a companion server program for the computer, that allows me to watch my ripped DVD movies or listen to my non-DRM music via streaming over Wifi. If I am not home, but have Wifi and know my external IP address for home, then I can access my music and movies while I'm away too. This is when I'll pull out the jailbroken iPad with MyWi tethering, or my Verizon MiFi. Strangely, with a jailbroken iPhone and My3G app installed, StreamToMe is not fooled into thinking I am using WiFi when I'm not. Yet I can do things like Facetime just fine over 3G. Also, to avoid memorizing my external IP address, I got a domain name from No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP and my computer updates no-ip regularly with my external IP, so if I go to my domain and open port I can get into my home computer's servers. It's like $19.95/year and worth it. I also use DotTunes on my iMac which sets up a server on my iMac that let's me stream my whole iTunes library music via Wifi or 3G to any browser equipped device like my iPhone, iPad, Mac or PS3. This only works for music, and you listen to the music via the server's web app using Safari for iPhone/Touch. It doesn't do movies like StreamToMe, but it does work over 3G as long as you can get into your home computer via IP and port from the outside. And, I have TwonkyServer which allows me to stream music to my iPhone for listening through the PS Audio TagNPlay app via Wifi (or via 3G using my external IP address). However, with a computer you can watch movies by streaming from TwonkyServer via a browser interface. The iPhone browser doesn't work with it yet, so movies aren't available for streaming.

Sure would love to see you there. Hope it all works out.

I decided not to unpack my main headphone rig after the Colorado meet, so I'm still mostly all packed up and ready to bring my gear to RMAF. Even without the PWD, ZDT and WES I'm enjoying all my music. I could sell all that stuff and buy one of my kids a year of college at CSU instead. If I narrowed my preferences down to only one flagship headphone I could almost get a second year squeezed in. Hmmm...
-
Thanks! I will check that out. Another ploy by Apple to sell more computers? If we didn't have an iMac that stays on all the time with iTunes and TwonkyServer running, I'd be looking for a Mac mini instead of the new Apple TV. I was ready for it to have a small amount of storage like an iPhone or Touch, but no storage at all surprised me. It's like a glorified Airport Express for video instead of just audio, but without the router or print server functions.
-
I wish they could have added a USB 2.0 port to connect a hard drive or optical drive. I like that you can add Netflix to a non-networked TV with this, but Roku has had that for a while. And I don't appreciate them removing the component video and analog audio output. I just discovered that I can't use the new device in my family room. I'm still using a 42" Sony rear-projection HDTV with a DVI port and several component inputs from 2004. I don't have an available optical input on my 2004 vintage Denon HTR either (using the 2 digital inputs for DVD and cable TV). http://www.usa.denon.com/avr1804_productsheet.pdf At least they offer a cheap way to transport audio and video to your TV and stereo system from your iTunes library, where the Airport Express only does audio.

Not as easy as I would like. I have about 100 ripped DVD movies in my library, and I cannot set them as rated-R, or PG-13, etc... Same with other small videos that I found online that may be NSFW. And there are a couple of rated R iTunes movie downloads they can watch, but the rest are off limits. So, how do you set or change ratings on these movies? I also have a couple of music albums labeled as "explicit" which really aren't bad, and blocking "explicit" prevents them from playing any of those songs. This is a little easier to solve because I know I could burn the songs to CD and re-import them, which is a pain. What I might do is move my 160Gb ATV from my bedroom, to put in the family room where the 30Gb ATV died last month. Then I could buy the new iTV for my bedroom where they don't watch TV.

I got the Nook cover with light, and really appreciate the light for when the room is not bright. As I get older I don't do as well reading in dim light.
