Well I got the Oppo 980 a couple of nights ago and I must say I'm duly impressed. Sound quality out of my admittedly mid-fi speaker setup (modded Mission Cyrus I and Paradigm Atoms) is very nice. To be honest I don't remember the MiniMax sounding a whole lot better out of this system. I'm not suggesting the Oppo is at that level though, more I expect I'm seeing the limitations of the amp and speakers. I'll be interested to see how it performs when I get the Pico and am able to listen to it with my E500's. What has really impressed me about the Oppo though is the feature set, ease of setup and use and the video quality. Even on our crappy old Fisher 24" CRT the difference over the Philips is easily noticeable on both divx/xvid and DVD. I even tried an xvid straight from USB thumb drive last night and it played without a hiccup. Build quality is also a nice step up from the Philips, it just seems a little more solid, polished and well thought out as a design. My only gripe so far is that a DVD burned with divx/xvid content automatically starts playing the first track, to get to the menu you have to press stop twice. The Philips had a similar function but you could turn it off so that the Menu came up first after inserting the disc. Maybe it's possible on the Oppo but I haven't found a way as yet.

Where is Thaddy, I haven't seen him around lately? Oh and I believe it was Earl who lured me over.

I'm not seeing it in your custom title therefore you can't be the asshat today.

And this has to do with headphones how?

Hehe, just went to the Management link in the last one, Jude and Neil are listed as expected but what got me was Jack Roush as VP of Product Development. I'd forgotten about Jude's link to Nascar.

elrod tom was the one who I always got into it with.

OK Kevin, enough beating around the bush, now tell us how you really feel. -
I just discovered this thread and thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. It's been a loooong time since I heard some of the better amps on the market but going on memory I'd say I'm on the fence. We had a Cary 300SEI at Swans Speakers when I was working there and I always enjoyed my time with it immensely but I had my eyes opened when we took some speakers down to the Philadelphia Audio Society's SET amp get together, there were some amazing amps there that trounced the Cary but most of them cost a fair bit more.

It's because some of them compared a whole pile of amps and are now THE authority. Now those "reviewers" have a following and their opinions are treated like gospel.

I'll be curious to see how well USB works, it would make transfering xvid and divx files around far easier. Too bad the USB couldn't be used with the Pico.

Well I broke down and ordered the Oppo DV-980H, I just couldn't fathom buying something a bit cheaper that wouldn't have the same performance and features just to save a couple of dollars.

Just like my daughter, Billy gets to be a princess for his birthday.

Sorry Biggie... you're just going to have to live with me.

Nice choice, I miss mine greatly.

Well it happened, our old Philips DVP642 finally gave up the ghost last night and it couldn't come at a more inopportune time with Christmas just around the corner. I had figured my next DVD player would be one of the Oppo's but given the time of year and the fact I can't get one here and it would probably cost over $200 to get one online and have it shipped here I'm not sure if I can sell the wife on it or not. The DVD player will be used mostly for Divx capabilities so maximum Xvid and Divx compatibility is a must. It will also be used with a Mission Cyrus 1 and Paradigm Atoms for music, mostly background, but we still like it to sound decent. There's also the possibility it could be used as a transport down the road but with the Pico coming soon my main source for serious headphone listening will move to the computer for now at least. So with all that in mind are there any of the cheaper DVD players which will meet our needs that stand out as a better choice? Sorry I know this isn't really a serious source question but I wasn't quite sure where to put it, if the mods wish to move it feel free.

I guess it's actually Razor I watched, it's labelled as episodes 1 and 2 of season 4.
-
Just watched the first two episodes of the new season last night. WOW!!! Although it doesn't continue where it left off last season the storyline was excellent and had much of the pace and intensity of the first season.

$550.00 US (approx.) is pretty expensive for cute and novel. For a portable amp at that price I'd expect it to be borderline ground breaking.

Paging Boomana....

Wow! I was cranky yesterday....

Your right, one's an asshat the other's a twat, definitely not the same thing.

Bluntly... why the fuck do you need a frequency response of 5 - 35KHz? Are you a dog? Looking for instant bowel movements (not that headphones could achieve that anyway)?

Store I worked at for a short time had Watt Puppies and Grand Slamms, this is more than 10 years ago but I still remember being less than impressed. I really didn't see what the big deal was about the Watt Puppies, there were several speakers in the store that sounded much better at half the cost. The Grand Slamms sounded big but again for that kind of change they just didn't get my mojo working. I do have a good friend who lives in Boston now that just bought Sophia's a short while ago and he seems to absolutely love them.

And people take quotes way out of context. I remember ASR's initial comments regarding the AE-2 having some similarities to the GS-1. Not to long after that I remember reading someone else saying something along the line of a member stating the AE-2 was as good as the GS-1, referring I assume to ASR's comments.

Just played TF2 for the first time, it's a blast!!!
