I had a lot of discs that wouldn't load when I was running parallels -- something to do with each OS trying to address the disc. If no, I'd try a simple restart, along with a quick firmware check. If you don't have the most current, go ahead and get it.

I found the basics to be somewhat overwhelming at first, so I found a competent local tech to set everything up. I made sure to buy my cartridge from him, and now we're drinking buddies. Now that I can comfortably and happily play records, I'm more interested in the tweaky aspects of vinyl. When I tried (and failed) to set the thing up myself, it was mistracking, distorting, damaging my vinyl, and removing any enthusiasm I had for the medium. What you need is proper tracking force, overhang, anti-skate, alignment, and leveling. The expense of the tools to accomplish that can be prohibitive, so if you know anyone over 50, or have a good shop nearby, I highly recommend having it done right the first time 'round.

I think his explanation backs up that statement. I can understand how the wide soundstage and instrument placing could be alluring at first, but upon closer inspection prove incompatible with your listening tastes.

Evidently there's a reason why it works on vinyl, but they don't seem to advertise it. You can build up a magnetic inclination of some sort on any surface simply by passing a magnet over it in the same direction multiple times. The surface itself doesn't have to be ferrous. This is what my wife tells me, and while she is infinitely smarter than I, she was also dumb enough to marry me, so take it with a grain of salt.

For a rough test, the "Decibel" program for the iphone is always within 2 dB of my ratshack dB meter. It costs $1. If you're measuring something professionally it's not worth your time, but it gives a good approximate level and an excellent relative level. If you're just trying to be around 85 dB, this will do the job well on the cheap.

They currently only sell these in blank disc format, right? You would need to first burn music to the computer, to be able to burn it back onto the magic disc, right? :asshat::asshat:
