Wasn't sure the best place to post, but this is pretty cool.  Chris is my nephew, he is brilliant (as is my niece, they met at MIT). https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-astronaut-chris-william

Why not 68?

I understand why it *could* be 79 (7 in "ten's", 7+1+1=9 in "ones"), but I think it could also be 68 - each number on the left goes up by 1 where each number on the right goes up by 11.

I wonder if this puzzle was designed to cause conflict by having 2 equally valid answers and making/letting the subject think there is only one. 2 subjects get different answers and duke it out...

It is also possible that only 20% of the people doing the puzzle will give BOTH answers.

Is there a reason it is not 68 for the reason I gave?

The last 2 on the left go up by 2 so the last 2 on the right go up by 22.

But don't you need to relate the number to the number 117 in the same way as the other numbers because of the equals sign?

No, the '=' is more of a relationship like an analogy in this sense. You could read it as "115 is to 57 as 117 is to what?"

Edit: Mathematics is so great that I might be speaking entirely out of my ass at this point. Fallacy rules.

This. 116=68. it skipped 116 :(

Actually, was directed to nikongod. But yes, there is also the increase by 11 pattern though I was thinking along the lines of the 7 and 7+1+1 (79) = 117.

It's not a very good puzzle. It relies too much on awareness of the question asked versus actual pattern recognition, IMHO.

It's a trick question.  It establishes a linear pattern early, then skips a step at the last.  The stupid thing is, it tells you it's going to do that.  It's telling you, whatever your first inclination is, it's probably wrong.  Double-think your answers (which most of us are taught not to do).
