Looks great Jacob.

I am bored with my watches so I think it is time to go on a shopping spree. What are the new watches I need to own?

  • Been after one of these for a while. Going in tomorrow to haggle. Wish me luck!

  • Prematurely touted a Lange once before but hope this one won't get away. Have been looking for a year or so, they are like hens' teeth.

  • Yeah, I also like that one a lot. Not quite up to your guys levels, but my wife got me this for Christmas...

Mom is the real hero here! Buys old watch, thereby financing new watch. Buys another new watch just because. Gives back old watch.

I certainly wasn't expecting it! I also don't have any real way of letting her know how appreciative I am of it, as it's very, very difficult to give her a thank you that she will accept as adequate.  I tried my best.

Jeff, get into independents. Laurent Ferrier, F.P. Journe, Moser.

A Ferrier Galet and a Chronometre Bleu, for instance, would certainly be interesting pieces!

Looks like I can check out the Ferrier and F.P. Journe watches at a local shop.  I typically am much more inclined toward tool watches so not sure they will be the watches to which I am drawn.

Vintage Rolex (maybe Heuer too) then. Is a gigantic rabbit hole.

This might seem like a dumb question, but what do you consider to be tool watches?

Sports watches.  Nothing small, thin or dressy and only in stainless, titanium, platinum or white gold.  I have most of the Rolexes, maybe just need a Daytona.  I would like to try some of the interesting Bremont, an IWC Big Pilot, VC Overseas Chrono, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape, etc., etc.

I consider many Sinn watches as the quintessential tool watches.

The Bathyscape looks interesting, particularly as it’s 38mm.  You thinking the black (grayish) or blue version?  The IWC is also a handsome looking watch IMO.

I like your second recommendation, ER...the Drive de Cartier.  Have for a few years now.  I think it’s just a bit too large for me, though.  Almost bought one a while back.

Blue.  I had a Fifty Fathoms at one point that I really liked.

The blue sunburst dial looks very nice, VPI.  I like that they didn’t put a blue band on it.  I find that’s overkill for my tastes generally speaking.

Hodinkee did a nice review on the watch you may have seen.

I have had several.  Really like them but get sick of all the scratches.  The finish is super scratch friendly.

Barring a Rolex and a Speedy, what would be a nice watch to buy and keep with the aim to handover to my kids when they graduate or are old enough to appreciate a time piece?

What is your budget?

About $5k

hmm..nice piece but i would prefer something more of a tool watch - divers or aviation.

Omega Seamaster AT 150m? List is $5500 but you can definitely get them for at least 10% off.

The Heuer reissues are also pretty nice if you want a chrono. Same price point.

New Tudor GMT is great value at $3900.

Or the Tudor Pelagos at $4400 if you want more of a chunky dive watch. Titanium case & bracelet to keep the weight down, which is nice.

Lots of good options. Or just * whispers * get a Speedmaster.

I think a really under appreciated tool watch is the VC overseas. Not too many show up used but when they do you can get them in that price range. Non chrono etc obviously.
