January 24, 201511 yr SI sucks ... just ask Carl. I agree it's a business thing, and they likely got a ton of stuff from independents, but still sucks. Is Nat Geo next? Jeff, I've owned and shot with 14-24, 16-35 and an old 20, 2.8 D. Loved them all, but in a ranking, it would go like this: 1: 14-24. 2: 20 2.8, 3: 16-35. If starting over, I'd grab the 20 first, because it's so small and easy to carry.
January 24, 201511 yr We are at the Natural History. The outdoor photography exhibition made me want to dig out the d200
January 24, 201511 yr You guys should have come out here. Today is open house so they let you back in the labs/hangars to see the stuff they are working on now. They also have a lot of kids stuff going on.
January 24, 201511 yr I assume you are at the Udvar-Hazy wing out at Dulles. It would have been fun. We are just killing time while people take looks at our house. I hope it sells soon. Edit: I have never been to the wing out there. Edited January 24, 201511 yr by Dreadhead
January 24, 201511 yr We missed the Air and Space at Dulles when we were in DC couple of years ago. I was very sad.
January 24, 201511 yr It is a fantastic museum. I have never made it into the restoration areas, it was pretty neat. First a few ISO 16000 samples. Edited January 24, 201511 yr by VPI
January 24, 201511 yr I found Major Tom Tiny little stunt plane. Tiny little non-stunt plane. Slightly larger tiny plane Edited January 24, 201511 yr by VPI
January 24, 201511 yr Some from the restoration and back of house area. The next large exhibit the Flak-Bait during resto.
January 24, 201511 yr Shop happened to have the hard to find battery grip for the D750 so I bought it and a new Nikon branded Black Rapid Sport strap. Of course I just got the L Bracket for the D750 w/out battery grip this week.
January 25, 201511 yr Nice outing, Jeff. ISO 16,000 you say ... amazing. You know RRS has 30 day return/exchange, right?
January 26, 201511 yr Yeah, I was very happy with a usable ISO 16000. The lights are being upgraded at the Museum so lighting was fairly weak throughout, especially in the Shuttle area.
January 28, 201511 yr Owners of Nikon D800s (that'd be me now), be careful with the bottom plate area regarding stress (large lenses on tripods) and drops: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1342802/0 http://www.fotozones.com/live/index.php/topic/57797-d800-loose-camera-base/ http://www.bythom.com/photographic-travel/africa/botswana-2013-workshop-blog/the-measure-of-a-safari.html I baby my stuff and almost never use tripods (and only plan to own small primes), so I should be fine, but look at that thin strip of magnesium. It should be twice as thick. The fact that the D810 has been beefed up in that area is telling.
January 29, 201511 yr I've spent the last 3 years trying to persuade myself that I don't need a FF DSLR. The itch just wouldn't go away. I've just picked up a good deal on some second hand gear. A D700 body and a Nikon 50mm f1.4 g. So far, I'm very impressed by this combo. I'm now looking to expand my lenses. From KEH I've picked up a Tokina 28-70 f2.6/2.8 and a Nikon 105 f2 DC. I'm considering my options for a wide angle prime. I'm thinking a 24mm f2.8D but have read mixed reviews. I'm also attracted to the Sigma 35mm Art. Any recommendations?
January 29, 201511 yr Sigma 35 is pretty great. I have also been really impressed by the 20 f1.8 so far. Not sure about Australia but always great deals on Fred Miranda for great lenses.
January 29, 201511 yr I'm thinking a 24mm f2.8D but have read mixed reviews. I love my 24F2.8 AIS. The prophet Ken Rockwell (and yes I'm joking about the prophet thing) assures us that the optics are the same. That being said, I would decide on a FOV~=focal length, and go from there. Its not *really* fair to compare such widely dis-similar focal lengths. Or since this is head-case, just buy them all. Because 24mm.
