Wow, for one reason or another I never ripped this album to my ipod .. so I haven't listened to it for at least 5-6 years... just popped it in and am grooving to it. I remember when I bought it when it first came out and was at a friend's house. I put it in the cd player to just "preview it" before we went out and was immediately floored enough to just lay on his apartment floor and listen to the whole thing through. They all left without me, but I didn't care, I was immersed in the music. </random pointless story>

Here's a short Stereophile blurb on the classical music download site Primetone. It seems like a nice alternative to the label stores although the article seems to indicate that they are trying to retain some control of their holds. Anyway, I kind of like the way that Primetone includes news and interviews so visiting the site is a quick way to see what's hot. This is in contrast to ClassicsOnline that seems to be a more traditional online music store. Be sure and note how different sites vary in price and formats. The last surviving member of the LA 4, Bud Shank, has passed away at 82. Everybody has heard his music. Among other things he played the flute solo on California Dreaming for the Mamas & Papas. Godspeed Bud.

There seem to be a lot of jazz fans here, and a number of SF Bay Area folks as well. If you get a chance to make it out to Oaktown, the Oakland Museum of California has an exhibit, "Birth of the Cool," highlighting jazz, design and art from midcentury California. For a jazz newbie like me, it was very educational. Even if you are an expert, there are a lot of audio/video works to enjoy, and a nice collection of photographs of many jazz greats taken by William Claxton. I am a big fan of Christian McBride, Steve Gadd, Everette Harp and consider Hajime the owner of East Winds Imports a good friend. I am sadden by the huge devastation that Japan has experienced with the tsunami and thought I would just pass this along. Jazz for Japan.

While I suspect that their methodology may be a bit suspect, I like the fact that they recommend specific pressings. Just don't know (personally) where to find a list of albums with measured DR rankings, although it seems to me that I've seen that before. If anyone has a good source, please share it. Spoiler Would have never guessed that Neil Young's Harvest would have made this list. Guess maybe because most of my listens were via cassette or 8-track most likely. See this article [NYTimes] for information on early 'pop' music. Much is available from UCSB. FOR a couple of months now my iPod has been stuck on Stella Mayhew's "I'm Looking for Something to Eat." It's a lurching little waltz-time pop tune, drawled over brass-band accompaniment. The lyric is hilarious, the lament of a gal on a diet who can't stop eating, and it climaxes with a glutton's soul cry: "I want some radishes and olives, speckled trout and cantaloupe and cauliflower/ Some mutton broth and deviled crabs and clams and Irish stew." I can't get it out of my head ? so far, it's my favorite record of 2006. As it happens, it's also my favorite record of 1909.…

Imagine fingerstyle guitar as influenced by Ali Akbar Khan/Ravi Shankar and Charles Ives/Bela Barotk as Bill Monroe and Mississippi John Hurt. Anyone else a fan? I'm particularly fond of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and James Blackshaw. I highly recommend Days Have Gone By, America, The Yellow Princess and Fare Forward Voyagers for Fahey, O True Believers by James Blackshaw, and most of Basho's early work, + Zarthus for something less guitar based. Has anyone heard this band's debut CD? They're spirit's of the 70s, no doubt. I think it's one of the better hard rock albums I've heard in a LONG time. I'm not sure I'd call it a great album, but it's a really solid debut. I'll be watching (and listening to) these guys, I think.
