  1. It's Bike To Work week or somesuch so I figured I'd get up at the crack of dawn (literally) and do a longer than normal commute. Spring is finally here and I was ~10mi in at 6:15 and took a minute to stop and enjoy the sunrise over the Atlantic.

  2. If I were going to Sundance or Cannes, I wouldn't mind a Filson, but I just go to courts and clients and such.

  3. Empire Builder to replace my stolen Tumi briefcase. Needed to switch it up to break the bad karma. Oh, and I am going to have Jeff wire it with a self-destruct mechanism to fuck up anybody who takes takes this one.

  6. I replaced a bunch of worn out parts on My Brompton. Chain Both rear sprockets Derailer pulleys. I replaced the brake pads a couple weeks ago. I also got the funny front-mounted rack. I think I'm going to try some light unsupported touring.

  7. Put in 100 miles this weekend. Had a pretty good ride today - 64 miles - longest solo ride for me ever. Came across this Chris Froome looking fella early on and I thought he would drop me in less than a mile but I ended up trading pulls with him for 5-6 miles before he went a different way. I was definitely riding beyond my means so it was good that he didn't stick around much longer. Overall a good weekend of riding, I definitely prefer to suffer in the heat

  9. by the way, its a real made by stax, stax jack. with the stax logo on the plastic on the inside. stax always refused to sell those jacks to us, we had to make our own. justin's jack are clearly superior... beats the hell out of a llmk1 or llmk2 for less than 17% of the price.

  10. This little guy works great: http://www.lowes.com/pd_215726-20097-9302011_0__?productId=3339728&Ntt=shop+vac&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dshop%2Bvac&facetInfo= I use it to suck the bilge of my boat dry after races and other wet use. Small, easy to handle, and great suck. As for Hvac overflow. You should have two pipes. One from the condenser inside the unit to the outside world. If it gets plugged or the unit freezes up, water overflows to the pan. Pan should have a drain also. Use compressed air to blow out the clogged lines. Your garden hose from below should work also....just don't overflow back into the house. Orange is just mold goop....no biggie. A little bleach will tame that. The main thing is to make sure the heat exchanger pan drain is clear....it's most likely clogged at the trap at the air handler. DO NOT use drain cleaner...it will eat the aluminum heat exchanger.

  11. Given how big a factor the output impedance is to the HD800 sound then that should be compensated for when comparing amps. Then again I'm a crazy purist... Sticking the HD800 on a WA5 is a bit like sticking the SR-009 on the Liquid Lightning, having a highly resolving transducer dumbed down by a highly colored amplifier. Didn't catch that SRD box. Do you have a link? Funny thing though, I recently found a box I'd put into storage years ago with a pile of SRD-7 transformers. No idea I had that so I'll have to find some use for them. Perhaps show Woo how the WEE should have been down with a regulated PSU and relay switching?

  12. fun discovery made yesterday: if you sit on the floor you get nice tactile response with the ATCs.

  17. Consumer speakers are meant to sound beautiful. What beautiful is,.. is in the eye of the designer. But, you won't sell a lot of your speakers if somebodies test cd is shrill and boomy in some environments so a lot of attention is paid to making it sound reasonably good at the extremes regardless of the room treatment. Studio near/mid field monitors are not designed to sound good. They are designed as tools for tracking and mixing (not mastering!). They can be accurate to a fault. Just an example, Most folks hate sibilance. But reducing sibilance can roll off highs and make the recording sound dull. Finding the right balance is the mixer's job. To do a good job of it, he's got to hear that irritating stuff clearly. Regarding the lack of bass, if you're reading review of monitors on pro audio sites, everyone there knows that you can't expect most nearfields to go down much below 50Hz. But, they also know that there isn't a whole lot below there on most recordings. So once they've gotten the bass and the kick (organ if it's there) to play nice with each other, everything else is well above 50. All mixers have some way to check those lower frequencies though (headphones, switchable sub etc). The bottom line for monitors for mixing and tracking is, since no monitor/setup is perfect, you need to know that system. What does it lack and what freq bumps does it have. That said, all the above does not mean that the monitors can't sound great for casual listening, it just means that when you read a review over on Gearslutz or Sound on Sound, "great" may have a very different meaning that what you might think. Monitors for mastering are a whole different thing. They need to be full range and often have subs. They are never nearfields and can extend far beyond midfield. They are often some very high priced audiophile speakers with room acoustics and amplification as perfect as possible. How much $$$ is spent in this pursuit depends on their target audience. Almost all mastering rooms are set up by master acousticians. And even though these guys usually have the best ears in the business, learning the sound of their room is critical.
