  2. I'm just happy to have gotten back on the damn bike today and ridden into work. I'm so far behind (mileage and fitness-wise) compared to last year it's frustrating. Hopefully the next couple of months will be good.

  3. This kind of shit makes me crazy. How do we expect kids to grow up to be functioning human beings when the authority figures in their lives so often are puerile fucktards?!!!! I'm glad Alden is OK.

  4. Yes, it is pretty lame what Larry did. Phil contributes a great deal to the community though. I wish he makes more of his design public likes KG. His designs always sound really good. Remember when Meta42 w/ OPA627 was considered quite a marvel of an amplifier when it bettered the HR cosmic? I took my maxed out PPA out of the storage recently and it still able to best Violetric V200 & HR Balanced Desktop Amp (circa 2009) in single-end output. Folks tend to forget that the maxed out PPA was a really good amp.

  7. Guys....you got these all wrong. PPL is the engineer behind LaRocco and Triad Audio and he is an exceptional person. Phillip La-Rocco is his real name and he is not "Larry Milligan". Both Larry & Traid Audio (Brad) used his designs to mfg. their amps. From what I understand, Phil (Uncle Phill) didn't not get involved with Larry on the business side of things (he just licensed out his designs). This man is the main ideas behind the DIY META42, and PIMETA, and PPA projects. He is one of the first person who implemented "discrete" buffer stage in headphones amplifiers (circa 2003). In fact, he can be credited for many of the discrete buffers that are being used in many amplifiers today. For instance, Headroom & RSA did not use discrete buffer stage until after 2006. I have dealt with Phill many times in the past and he is an outstanding individual. So I can vouch for him here. In fact, he was kind enough to send me one of his tube amplifier prototype that sound just wonderful on an extended 3 months loan. This e-Phi is just pure bliss to listen to. Can you guys remember the PPA amplifer, and even the Pocket Reference amp? These amps together with Justin's Gilmore V1 & V2 kicked serious ass in the days and continue to compete with anything up to $1000 today. The L3 is just an evolution of Pocket Reference. The L3 is the best sounding portable headphones amplifier I've ever tried. It is considerably better sounding than Justin's Pico Power, albeit not as versatile. http://tangentsoft.net/audio/ppa/ http://tangentsoft.net/audio/meta42/ Dusty, you were around back then...so you should remember these right?

  9. The on board version can only handle so much power because of the heatsink size. The default is 5ma, which at 450V is 9 watts total for the output stage which is 2.25 watts per output device. The off board version is limited by only 2 things, the size of the heatsink and the maximum amount of power the output devices can handle. So yours is 14ma which is 25 watts per channel. The effect of the higher current is to extend the high frequency response well past 50khz. So the amp will definitely sound different. The choice of resistors will likely not make a change that you can ever hear. Except that a few of the trendy and expensive resistors cannot handle the voltage and cause all sorts of trouble. An lsk389 is going to be better than 2 x 2sk170 from an electrical drift standpoint. Not going to make any difference in the sound. Now the pot makes a big difference. RK50 and P&G are definitely the best of the bunch, rk27 and tkd less so. Mainly in channel to channel matching. dact will do better on matching. digital attenuators are even better.

  10. This is probably a good time to let you guys know this. I'm sure that no better time will ever come. As of today, March 3rd 2079, I am leaving the unincorporated territories of New Colombia to pursue my future in exotic fuel speculation. Our resources have simply run out, gentleman, and it's time we face it. I have terminated all my existing claims, and left them in hands that I consider to be capable -- BRAD from TRIAD audio. If you see my human son, or any of my children who do not identify as gendered or specied, please direct them to my new address. Questions regarding service can be bundled together, palletized, and shot straight into the sun.

  12. Yeah, but AMDs problem is that they still cannot compete with Intel in most tasks that I am interested in. Sadly, the Athlon 64 glory days are over for AMD. They just cannot compete for the mid to high end builds. Because of this, Intel has been sitting on its ass for years in the desktop area.

  13. Al, by now you are hopefully settled in in MI, and resting after a horrendous last night, and long day of traveling today. Glad Alden responded to treatment, and yes, allergies and bad reactions are very scary episodes. Especially if you don't see them coming, which is most of the time. Had our share, and wouldn't wish on anyone, especially when kids are the victims. Enjoy the family time in MI. Should be a nice change of scenery.

  14. Finally time to replace my 24" Samsung 245BW. I believe I've had it for almost 8 years. A great monitor, a real classic TN, but it's really starting to hurt my eyes, and the colors look terrible. After, no kidding, years of research, I settled on the HP 27xi: http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-27-Inch-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B00B332A9C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405638993&sr=8-1&keywords=hp+27xi Why the 27xi: -GLOSSY! So hard to find a glossy monitor. I know a lot of people hate glossy monitors, but my office at home has thick curtains, no worries about glare. And glossy monitors are so much easier on my eyes. -Regular ole' 1080. I don't need no fancy resolution. -Its bigger. Never had a 27" monitor. -Great reviews all around.

  16. I've been traveling to Michigan since 4:30am after being in the ER until midnight with Alden who had an extreme allergic reaction to something we had for dinner. He's fine but that was no fun. He had hives over his whole body and really bad ones from his chest to his knees. Luckily he didn't experience any real breathing difficulty other than a racing heart. I nearly died as a kid after a bee sting caused my throat to swell shut. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? Plus, we now have Epi pens.
