Blood clot is ruled out now On the whole, it was a lovely vacation, in spite of ill health and other various hassles. And it was great to meet up with some of the SoFla crew, however briefly.4 points

I've actually been enjoying the heck out of the HD800s lately. They definitely sound better to me off an amp with a less than nero-zero output impedance and actually sound much better with pretty high output impedance.3 points

For a bunch of boozers, you guys really have been around the headphone block a few times, huh? Where's Tyrion?3 points

I am about to decide this is the best way to guy as it will allow me to use Tidal from the iPad and potentially even bring in some of my balanced headphones for quiet time. I did buy the volume control, thanks for reminding me of this, to get me started at least as the Stealths show up tomorrow in my office.2 points

Not just today, but over the last couple days..... Had a chat with my mom who said a long-lost cousin was trying to get in touch with me through Facebook. Hardly get on anymore, but did, and sent a reply. The woman's name was familiar to me, and I found out she and I worked at the same company for ~4 months in the mid-90's. Her grandmother and my grandmother were sisters. So several email exchanges, a family tree on Ancestry.com, and a dropbox download of a recording made in 1977 during the Shiva visit for her grandmother. In that recording MY grandparents and the only other sibling I regularly saw (and her husband) were talking a lot about stories of the "old days" and the family. What a treat! My grandparents both died over 20 years ago, and the other aunt and uncle even before that.... Now we are working on plans to meet up with these long-lost cousins, and enjoying a romp through our family history! I love this stuff.....2 points

I love my 24F2.8 AIS. The prophet Ken Rockwell (and yes I'm joking about the prophet thing) assures us that the optics are the same. That being said, I would decide on a FOV~=focal length, and go from there. Its not *really* fair to compare such widely dis-similar focal lengths. Or since this is head-case, just buy them all. Because 24mm. Remembering by Lord Nikon 12, on Flickr Bridge in the fog by Lord Nikon 12, on Flickr2 points

Chocolate is healthy, and peanuts are healthy, so it is practically a superfood. I had a burger (with duck bacon), onion rings, and a milkshake at BurGR.1 point

Steer far far far away from any TT with automatic anything. Adjustable VTA is nice, but also not I think the audiophile community makes MUCH more of VTA than is necessary because a modern tonearm needs to be designed to be put on who-knows-what TT with who-knows-what height from the plinth to the platter. TT's designed to "just work out of the box" (by engineers {who got payed to do that}) can easily get VTA to within a few MM for any cartridge with a fixed tonearm.1 point

I've spent the last 3 years trying to persuade myself that I don't need a FF DSLR. The itch just wouldn't go away. I've just picked up a good deal on some second hand gear. A D700 body and a Nikon 50mm f1.4 g. So far, I'm very impressed by this combo. I'm now looking to expand my lenses. From KEH I've picked up a Tokina 28-70 f2.6/2.8 and a Nikon 105 f2 DC. I'm considering my options for a wide angle prime. I'm thinking a 24mm f2.8D but have read mixed reviews. I'm also attracted to the Sigma 35mm Art. Any recommendations?1 point

Nothing wrong with either table! I foolishly had it in my head I NEEDED the Technics despite it needing work out the door (easy fix for auto return level) so I traded in my Pioneer for store credit. In hindsight I probably got peanuts for the Pioneer and it is/was a very respectable table that I just dumped without a thought. I do love my SL-1600 but not having adjustable VTA is a slight detractor.1 point

At 18 I had what I thought then was a decent system. Phase Linear amp, Carver pre-amp, Yamaha TT and ESS AMT 1D's with the big Heil air motion transformers. Any time one of my peers would suggest his crappy Cerwin Vega/Optimus rig (the favorite of teens of that time) would keep up, I'd crank that record up on their system. None of my friends knew what was coming, and many a woofer saw it's demise.1 point

I had that one at my college suite my senior year, would play it on an Onkyo receiver driving (forgot) speakers and a Phase Tech subwoofer. The cannons would literally cause the sub to dance a bit, but it played it pretty damn well. One of my suitemates was a transfer from Norwich University and said it reminded him of "home."1 point

SA5K are also very placement-sensitive*. It sounds weird, but they might just fit your head better than other people. That being said, I can never reallllly get their treble down to what I consider flat (HD800ish). * Most headphones are, actually.1 point

Glad you guys got in on the deal - I have to tell you, these things are super impressive. Great treble and midrange, tons of bass, it gets bass-i-rific in my room. And, they have the little DIP switches on back to tailor the response, you can set the bass cutoff, treble cutoff points, there is a lot of versatility in the EQ to get it just right in your room. Mine are running flat, but I could probably trim the bass if I wanted to make it linear. Nah, just kidding, I like the bass.1 point
