  1. Hello, while i wait for some parts for restoring my sra12s i made some new earpads for my sigmas. I also made the internal dampening. Following the advice of Spritzer i used the most dense material i could find. By pure luck the material and quantities i used seems to be ok. The soundstage seems here, definitely the best of the headphones i own. The bass is present and clear so i am pretty happy of the final result. I decided to substitute the earpads because i don't feel comfortable using earpads that have been used by someone else for 30 years... I decided to not use a spare pair of lambda earpads because of the different shape of the lower back part. I made them in leather following the procedure Stax (or their supplier) probably used. I used an embroidery machine to sew the ear oval on the reverse side of fabrics, then i reversed the fabrics. With the fabrics now on the right side i added some low heigh memory foam cutted a couple of mm smaller than the finished earpad. Now i used the embroidery machine to close the earpads. Cutted the excess leather and here they are. They are a bit bigger than the original ones and are less stuffed, nothing dramatical but i will remade them the next time i have time to use the embroidery machine. The same method can be used to make them with a sewing machine for the oval and an overlock machine using 3 threads and a short lenght stitch.

  2. Silver had to go to the vet, today, for an upper respiratory infcection. You would have thought she was being murdered. Now she is very sleepy.

  3. I think the GS-X Mini would be a great choice for the Utopia. As good as the ZH1ES is, it isn't as transparent as the GS-X / or the mini Dynalo that I have. Less dynamic sounding too. However, you can buy the ZH1ES used for less than $1500 and you are about 85-90% there to the GSX Mini and you don't need to get another DAC. If you need a cheap but very good DAC, I highly recommended the SMSL SU-8 1.2 version DAC. For $250 off Amazon, it offers a really good sound for cheap. No harshness that I could detect either.

  4. Just wanted to share one of my most favorite acquisitions among hundreds of manual and electric tools. Heinrich deep throat is capable to punch holes in the center of 400mm panel (hello large enclosures like Modushop Slimline). No burrs, very clean holes, any hole is perfectly perpendicular to surface, and waaayy more accurately positioned than made by drill bit as you can never avoid drill bit wandering. Precision is close to CNC milling. I also use smaller punch Roper Whitney XX with smaller throat.

  7. We've gotten around 4" so far today with a bit more predicted over night before it turns to ice and rain tomorrow. Should make for a giant mess of the morning commute. By Friday it's supposed to be in the low 50s. WTF?

  8. I replied to a gent on H-F, a nice old-timer I remembered, who asked me about my experience with the DSHA3F. Hoping it resulted in another order.....! (Very late edit: it did!)

  10. Sorry team - I am not good at being clear today - I guess the week in vegas did have an affect. I was trying to show the amount of snow we received last night (the pile on top of the table) vs the total amount of snow (on top the fire pit). I know that these are not large amounts - but they are saying 70 year record.
