  2. Today I went to check out a new project that I'll be heading up in the Oakland Hills. The house is owned by a former client that I dearly love. While there I got to talking to her tenant who was in the process of moving out. He offered me several pieces of mahogany, left over from a project. Then he asked if I'd be interested in an old Stanley router. Not sure how old, but it's old, and all metal. While I was looking that over, he brought me the first powered drill, patented in 1917. Super awesome stuff! Pics to follow. My plan is to offer them up to the new woodshop, as decoration, even though I believe they both work. He wouldn't take any money. He just wanted them to be appreciated. They will!

  3. I made lumber! The tree cutter who took down my brother's trees gave me some small Black Acacia logs and I just tried cutting 5/4 slabs out of it. I think I may have discovered the Temple of Gozer the Gozerian in the middle of the log. 😱

  4. New speed monitor (tach) installed but still having issues with other light sources causing it not work (incandescent bulbs in the ceiling) 😤 I guess either I need more infrared light or a ir pass filter?

  5. I finally got around to servicing my Sony PS-X7. The speed control was acting up by holding a speed but then jerking the table every couple of second. Found the service manual online, did a couple of the steps to adjust the speed controller and cleared the problem completely. Also learned a skill I never thought I would have to learn, how to wrap wires.

  8. After 8-10 redesigns, we have settled on the final top of the dog crate which will end up having a 2” lip of ebonized oak around the outside to tie it together with the rest of the crate. The big slab of Purple Heart was “too dark” for Kasia so I dug up some maple.

  10. I've been doing some reading, and the Systemdek IIX seems kinda interesting, if I could find one with a better arm than the stock ones. I bought (traded for) a Project RPM5-1, and I don't know if it is the cartridge (Ortofon 2M Bronze) or what, but it seems a bit bright and lightweight in sound. Otherwise, I was thinking about something like a VPI Classic? I need to get my Thorens TD-320 out of storage, and see what that is like these days with the Salas phono stage I built. It has a newish AT 440ml(a?) on it, but I've never heard it with a decent phono stage. I also had bought a Grace F9e which I had wanted to try out on it.

  14. Oof. Given the magnitude of the imbalance, you may have changed (increased) the stator spacing when reassembling the driver. Just try assembling it again, but this time with some gentle pressure on the stators. A small wound should not induce such a large imbalance, nor will a little foreign matter. Another possibility is that the diaphragm was installed the wrong way... I'm not sure why it matters, but it sometimes does.
