  1. Got to see my favorite, Mark Burgess of the Chameleons, at a special tour he's doing. He does acoustic, and he has a guitarist doing the echo-y/reverb-y stuff for which the band is well known. REALLY interesting concept, and last night's venue was a little "Coffee Haus" above a Firehouse museum type place. All in Millis, MA, pretty much nowhere. The room was very nice and quite intimate. Took my son, we both loved it, and got to chat with Mark before and after. Lots of good chat about the songs and his history, stuff we had never heard before. Quite a great night. And I'm going to see him again Thursday night at another place.

  2. I, too, have the Ety's, only they were rebranded as something else, but I swear by 'em. Hold on, let me look... LOLOLOL I accidentally searched in "Prime Video" and got this: Kek, as the kids would say. I'm pretty sure I have the Hearos -- basically, rebranded Etymotics: Swear by 'em. Forgot 'em enough times that I went by the CVS near the ((no longer) new) 9:30 club, I've tried most of the foam ones, and they all change the sound profile (boomy). These are the closest thing to transparent I've found.

  5. Our good friend, Lance's fencing coach and mentor just finished a world cup/world championship fencing competition in Cairo. As has been his record for many years, his fencers medaled! Now through the Paris Olympics he is co-coaching the Hong Kong team.

  6. Does live Political Musical Theater count as live music? (There was a live band providing the music) Saw the San Francisco Mime Troupe Present "Back to the way things were" In Mill Valley. We had snacks. And the 5 person cast put on an entertaining, and thought provoking, show. Comrade. https://www.marinij.com/2022/07/13/theater-review-san-francisco-mime-troupe-battles-robber-barons-onstage-in-the-parks/

  7. Another vote for the Etymotic ER-20, or whatever they are called these days. Been using the same ones for 15 years at this point.

  9. Mine are so old school they were called ER20's ( with the stems, unlike the new fangled stemless ER20XS's ) You know, from the before times, when I might consider remaining in a crowded enclosed venue, for an extended period, while being encouraged to engage in strenuous breathing by chants of "make some noise" , or "I can't hear you", fun. Or maybe thats just me. I notice on https://www.etymotic.com/hearing-protection/ that the non Brents can now avail themselves of not just the plebian PRO's https://www.etymotic.com/product/music-pro/ but the 1%'er (upcoming?) PRO ELITE's https://www.etymotic.com/product/music-pro-elite/ Have they left room in the marketing space for the Apple compatible MAX PRO ULTRA ELITE's ? ( or some non copyright infringing combination / ordering of those superlatives)

  10. Andy Summers. Retrospective. I remember seeing him live about 15 years ago (Antonio was beginning to pervert me at that time 😁). He didn't leave me very impressed... and he didn't play a single song by The Police.

  11. The Hario V60 is definitely a mainstay; if you go to basically any 3rd wave coffee bar. chances are their pour-overs are with that. Here are the brewers I own: V60: it has a good chance of being fairly close to what the roaster would serve in one of their cafes. Said to bring out acidity and sweetness, but the V60 is so widespread that I consider it the "default" for comparison Tornado: more consistent. A bit less pointed of a profile than the V60 CAFEC Deep: emphasizes brightness without acidity, but can make things a bit more bitter if you're not careful. In general, I think if you already have a Chemex, the V60 seems different enough to give a try. Also, it's not at all a challenge to alter the taste slightly by changing filter papers, technique, etc.

  13. So great. The second album -- Danger Money -- is entirely different -- trio: Eddie Jobson, John Wetton, and Terry Bozzio, but still worth hearing. I'm definitely a fan of both albums, but Holdsworth was mad good.

  17. Saw Jimmy Vivino and Ronnie Earl last week. Really nice Blues, all different types. We went because of Ronnie Earl, and the fact that Jimmy had grown up and went to school in the same hometown as my wife (Glen Rock, NJ); I wasn't familiar with him otherwise. Turned out to be a HELL of a show! Ronnie has a bunch of health issues, so it was great to see him live. And Jimmy was right up there in energy, voice, and spirit. he also had a boatload of great stories from clubs across the states and musicians from the 60's on....

  18. Very happy to come across this thread--last month I picked up something from a builder in my town who imports espresso machines from Italy then soups up the internals and sells them to rube...I mean, to afficionados like me. No, he does not also build amps. Limitless variation and plenty of ruined shots equals big fun. My favourite part of the learning process is how different the results are with a bottomless versus a standard filter. In fact, I prefer bottomless by a country mile--more crema and far more coffee extraction per gram. I'm surprised they aren't more commonly used.
