New Members - How did you discover Head-Case?
Mister, you have yourself a deal. I intend to study the techniques you employ to keep parrots from chewing on headphone cables.

"In the flesh" was not meant to be taken literally, Wayne, as talented as I'm sure you would be if I were there.

New Members - How did you discover Head-Case?
You probably won't have to bide your time for too long. I suppose I'm still relatively new, so I can share my story. I was googling the head-fier "mitchb", trying to figure out how I could mess with him after reading this thread on the other forum. I found a parallel thread relating to the situation on this forum, lurked for a long while out of fear, finally registered, got told off by Dusty, persevered, really enjoyed mostly reading, and eventually got told off less and less until Dan let me into the back room. I'm very happy to be here, especially due to all the penis jokes. My wife is hoping to schedule a road trip to California one of these days, so I might actually get to meet some of you in the flesh at some point.

DAC vs. Stats -- FIGHT
Me too. In conservation biology you often don't get a sample size big enough to have p < 0.05, but the consequences of dismissing the results can be dire when managing threatened species.

DAC vs. Stats -- FIGHT
I would also suggest reading this paper: The insignificance of statistical significance testing.

DAC vs. Stats -- FIGHT
p = 0.051 = "Shit, I should have done a power analysis before data collection!" I haven't read the Burnam and Anderson book entirely, but I'm probably the only one studying biology who hasn't - seems that way sometimes anyway. Still, it all depends on the study. Some of the most interesting stories in biology come down to a simple "does this have an effect or not?" question, where traditional hypothesis testing is entirely appropriate. I do, however, agree with morphsci's point about stating the p-value, rather than just stating that it was > or < 0.05.

A Bay Area Meet on 2-11-12.
That's no fun. I had a ruptured eardrum due to an infection last year, and my symptoms were similar (less blood, more pus in my case). It took a couple months to get hearing back to normal, and in the meantime I was quite grouchy. I hope your recovery is speedy and full.

And now what did you do TODAY?
Looks like a sweet bike. I've been learning how to use R statistical software, and I had a wee breakthrough today with some analysis of my Master's project data. I feel like celebrating, though I now have to tweak the graphs and tables I've made so that I can start writing about them.

Help With Amp and Headphone
They may be lacking in size, but their aurifice penetration is among the best. You may wish to pair them with the Deep Dhik Bone Conductor personal subwoofer. Edit: Dammit, Fitz beat me to it.

Help With Amp and Headphone
As long as you selected the woody option when you ordered them, you should be well satisfied.

Help With Amp and Headphone
Ecclesand's Law: as portability of amp approaches infinity, loss of source material due to mp3 conversion approaches 0. I'll be curious to find out if the Fii0 E11 is portable enough to achieve this. Please report back.

Low Powered Amp for Speakers
Me too. I need something cheep to power some Realistic Minimus 11s, which seem to sound okay as nearfields in the little while I've spent with them.

2011 Telluride Bluegrass Festival
2012 update. Anyone thinking about going this year? The lineup, as usual, looks pretty stellar. http://www.bluegrass...ide/lineup.html Asr, I notice that Alison Krauss & Union Station are playing. I bought tickets on the off-chance that I can make the logistics work, but it's a long drive from Manitoba.

Twin Cities?
My family and I are heading to Minneapolis-St. Paul for a concert on April 6, and staying for a few days. I don't know if any of the regulars here are from the Twin Cities, but if anyone wants to grab a beer, let me know.

Help picking headphones?

Starting to really hate that other site...
What Steve said, although I don't go quite far enough back to remember what HF was like in the glory days. I think I floated in on one of the first of many waves that cumulatively wrecked everything, in fact. For the last year at least I've only logged in there to check the thread about Winnipeg meets. Sadly I've not been able to convince any of my locals to register here, so far at least.

Chair: Steelcase Leap or Herman Miller Aeron or neither
I have no literature to back this up, but I find that standard four-legged chairs (no wheels) are easier on my back, as they discourage my natural inclination to slouch. My undergraduate university had a computer lab with molded plywood chairs. They were only comfortable if you sat with good posture, and I found this actually made me a bit more productive, even if I couldn't wheel around the way I preferred. My current home office chair is from my dining room set. It has a plush seat and a woven (wicker, sort of) back. It's comfy and gives some support, but it doesn't lend itself to leaning way back. I wouldn't go back to a wheeled task chair. YMMV.

And now what did you do TODAY?
I'm sort of a grad student again! My supervisor found a small bit of money and told me to finish Chapter 1 by end of March, and Chapter 2 by end of May. Payment on delivery. Now my wife can look after the kids for a few months, and not have to leave them with me while she gets a job. Head-case, your collective duty is to tell me to get back to work whenever you see me posting in the daylight hours, unless it's in the "what are you drinking" thread. Glad to hear you're still employed, Pars!
