  2. ^ Walden Green (Pitchfork) agrees with Petridis on Romantic https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/taylor-swift-actually-romantic/ ‘I’m also filling out my Jack Antonoff apology card as we speak, now that Max Martin and Shellback—ostensibly the great pop minds of the century—have aided and abetted in a song that sounds like the Kidz Bop version of the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?”’
  3. I don't know if I love that review from a single listen to the album, but agree on similarities of Mind and Romantic.
  4. Before Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, listening to a new gal on the scene, Taylor Swift, and her The Life of a Showgirl Ex.

Carol Kaye Is Being Honored by the Rock Hall. She Doesn’t Care. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/24/arts/music/carol-kaye-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ok8.jc_B.uWHtQAZ4VieQ&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare (gift article) The first time Paul McCartney played the Beach Boys’ 1966 album “Pet Sounds,” he was struck by the grand ambition of the music as well the intricacies of tracks like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” “And as I was a bass player,” McCartney noted in a recent interview, “I listened closely to the bass parts.” Like most people, McCartney assumed the song’s melodically affecting rhythms were the work of Brian Wilson. “Then later I looked at the credits,” he said, “and I saw it wasn’t Brian on bass, it was this girl, Carol — Carol Kaye. That was quite a shock to me. I started looking into what else Carol played on, and she was on everything.”

  15. Finding Peter Putnam: The forgotten janitor who discovered the logic of the mind https://nautil.us/finding-peter-putnam-1218035/ It’s easy to say why someone is wrong. The hard part is figuring out why they’re right.

  17. For those in the Bay Area, the Fraenkel Gallery has a Katy Grannan exhibit titled Mad River, portraits from Humboldt. Small (it’s not the main show), but great.

  23. I forgot about the Apple event today, but the camera changes, including combined cameras and square front facing sensor, are interesting moves. Also liquid cooling. Plus if you thought iPhones were too fat...
  24. This one hits. Saw them only once, when running spotlight at a show. I regained most of my hearing about a week later.
  25. Omar El Akkad's One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. 'On October 25, 2023, after just three weeks of the bombardment of Gaza, Omar El Akkad put out a tweet: "One day, when it's safe, when there's no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it's too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this."' I don't know how the recent-ish three short, but very different, including author's backgrounds, Ta-Nehisi Coates', Peter Beinart's and now (in my reading order) Omar El Akkad's books are/will be taken, but this one hit hardest for me. Part of that may be being a parent/view towards the future. All certainly worth a read. May hit Finkelstein's next.
