I have an SE-90 PCI. It's not too bad as a source but if you are planning to buy any remotely high end gear I wouldn't advise using it other than as a transport via Toslink. What computer soundcards suffer from, in my experience as direct sources, is a lot of noise. You won't get the clear and distortion free background akin to high end sources. All depends on what you wan't...i'd think at the very least you would be left with an okay transport.

Did any of you guys get a chance to listen to some of the mid-fi sources? (Lavry DA10, Transporter, etc) I mean I completely understand if you didn't. In the presence of that NWO Esoteric I probably wouldn't either Just curious about how much better they are. Probably difficult to measure when not used on the same rig though..

Congrats on the purchase..K1000 can be your best friend or worst enemy. I think you'll notice in time that it'll reveal how good (or bad) your rig really is. As JonL said before replace that stock XLR to speaker extension as it is quite horrible. When I upgraded to a starquad extension there was a huge improvement in sound. There was some mention of amps recommended for the K1000 above and i'll chime with some Pass Labs related suggestions in case you are interested in an upgrade or different sound in the future: Aleph 3, FirstWatt F1, F2, or F3

Actually my preamp only used 1 12au7. The rectifier was 6x4, buffer 12FQ7, and driver 12au7 =P. But you are sorta right..the minimax without upgrades does take 2x 12au7's
