  1. Good thread idea! 1) 160-165 lbs. Currently around 190 2) 2000+ miles. Same thing as Nate in terms of available decent conditions, though I did do some riding in Nov. and a slight amount in Dec. Hopefully commuting 2-3 times a week will aid in this (18 mi round trip). 3) Do the Dairyland Dare in Wisconsin in August, metric century, around 4000' climbing Will need lower gearing than my current 43/24 low for this one. Maybe try the 150k distance? 4) Increase speed to 18+ mph for an hour. Not sure how doable this one is as I ride by myself and there are quite a few stop lights/signs. 5) Quit smoking in January (again ) I currently smoke about 1/2 pack a day.
  2. Understood. What were they asking for it? I figured $1K would be the absolute most I would have gone for that, and that is high. Maybe you should consider having SS couplers on your new bike? Would make travel with it easier (bike bag), and you wouldn't need to leave it in Texas.
  3. You decided against the Bob Jackson? A vintage bike like that might not be what you are looking for, but it looked like a nice bike.
  4. Happy Birthday, Christmas babies!
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. There's a guy on BF who has ridden when it was 40 out. MINUS 40. That's crazy, but he said it wasn't bad at all
  7. Good luck on that Bryan.
  8. It was 25-27 Mike. 10mph N wind.
  9. Way to go Vicki! Was it your right ankle that you injured (hence the thinking about unclipping your left)? Mike, sorry about the scrapes, but sounds like you had fun. Me: weenied out and only did 8 miles. Actually got a bit hot in places. Wore my new Santini shorts (likey), a pair of tights with a pair of Nike running pants over them, an Adidas T, sweatshirt and Columbia fleece over that. I hadn't eaten anything and was feeling like I might bonk, so cut it off a bit short. Still nice to get out though (although not as nice as it was for Vicki to get out )
  10. Congrats on riddance of the cast Vicki! Hope things go well and keep healing up! Nice bike Jeff! Looks to be mid '70s? EDIT: it is sunny and 25F here, light wind, no snow. Trying to talk myself into going out for 15-20 miles...
  11. Informative, thanks! We have what I presume is a Vic Firth mill that we bought a number of years ago from Williams Sonoma. I've been happy with it, though it doesn't handle really large Tellicherry peppercorns well. We mainly use malabar though. Buy most of our spices from Penzeys.
  12. Mike: try to get the bead of the on side (assuming you have one side on) into the channel in the middle of the rim. That might help. Then try to work the other side on with your hands, using tire levers towards the end. If you succeed in getting it on, compress both sides of the tire and look down along the bead and rim to make sure you don't have tube sticking out anywhere. If you can't get it on, you might want to try a tire jack such as the Kool-Stop. Good luck, and keep the cussing to a minimum I know, it isn't funny... Re: the Conti GP-4000 tires: I haven't used them, but did hear one bad thing about their traction on wet surfaces. One guy on BF was talking about going down a hill with a curve with some water on it at around 35-40 mph and having the back end come unglued. He managed to ride it around the curve without falling. When he got to the bottom, he said he got off the bike and puked his guts out. Sounds like fun! He prefers the Veloflex Pave or Master 22s.
  13. Press a book or something between your legs, standing straight up, bare or stocking feet. Measure top of book to the floor.
  14. Yeah, I would agree. I an 5'8" with a 30" inseam (can't remember my cycling inseam) and a 53/54 is what I should ride. My RRA is a 22 1/2" C-T, but fits me fine. You should be on a minimum of a 56. You would be very cramped on a 53 or 54. Your reach measurement and top tube length (or effective length) is more important though.
  15. Mine is a quad 10K motorized.
  16. I've got a motorized one (Alps RK27) kicking around that I don't have plans for. I'll have to see if it is 50K or what though. Let me know.
  17. Damn, I wish I was down 12 lbs. Congrat(s) Vicki!
  18. Happy Birthday!
  19. What is your TW cable modem (w/phone)? An Arris something or other? That is why I haven't bought my own modem yet, because Comcast says they can't guarantee future compatibility if you have voice. If it is internet only, then they have an approved list and you can go ahead and buy your own.
  20. Happy Birthday Gene! Hope you have a great one!
  21. test post cleared cache in FF 3.6.28 (old G5 mac), and it works
  22. Happy Birthday!
  23. Yes, Comcast has always charged for that. If we didn't have Comcast voice as well, I would also just buy my own modem. It does seem sleazy to just all of a sudden start charging for it. Too bad consumers can't just modify their acceptance terms anytime they feel like it as the providers seem to like to do....
  24. Those look nice Jim! I was on a mission when I bought my Sidis (my brother had some), but would agree that they are priced rather insanely. Though I think that about most bike stuff (bikes, components, apparel) these days. Must be getting old. Now, get off my lawn!
