  1. I'd wager you can get everything from SumR, Mouser and B&D for KGSS and the BH. Add in a case vendor, wire vendor, output jack vendor, a attenuator vendor and FPE, so that makes 8, max. (Since this is a beginner project, we need to assume nothing is on hand, fair?) So, how many vendors did you use for your exstata build?
  2. good point in fact. As long as you avoid the extra power supply, but yeah definitely possible. Beefy: let's not start that "easily available parts stuff"... I do agree about nice available documentation. Perhaps we can get TomB interested in distributing a 'stat amp
  3. But how many Stax designs have as few gain stages? I really think the J271 is a great part here, just need Fairchild to offer binned versions... Edit: maximing Idss is one way to maximize gm. I pointed out the proper way to choose devices in the HF thread.
  4. I bought a couple hundred each of 2SJ74V and 2SK170V a while back, but hard to get now. Looking forward to sticking them in the output stage of my little JFET amp. As for needing 50 J271 to get a good quad, that's crazy. Trust me, I'd wager I've matched more than anyone else.
  5. Craig, do you have a recommendation for a good flux remover? Pure alcohol and large boards have never worked well together in my experience no matter how much compressed air you use.
  6. most likely they'll just flash the thing... heck, that thing's so beautiful I'd flash it just to see if I had a chance with it.
  7. I did in fact like it when I heard it on two occasions at meets. Probably listened to it 1 hour or so on two or three separate occasions. Three different versions, the latest iteration my favorite, never heard the latest SS version. I was about as vocal as people were allowed to be about the previous versions not sounding right, and the current hybrid version was definitely better than the previous ones, as long as you didn't turn them up too loud. Anyways, all that to say then I built a SS version. Then I sold it.
  8. At 1%? Nope, same distortion, different ears.
  9. yeah, I was curious about that, hence the question somewhere on the previous page about the measurement used for the top of the board to the bottom of the panel...
  10. Chris: The issue with the RCA jack IMHO is that the securing hole interfers with the securing hole on the IEC, so the entire RCA jack leans a bit and causes the template to be off. Any chance you could verify the location of the pot and antirotate point on the front panel when you get around to those, I've sorta been waiting for another person to chime in before I attempt it. Doug: I was wanting to up the gain while I'm in there to up the current as you recommended above. Any recommendations here? I don't have a single can that I use below 70% of the pot and all in fact are comfortable at 100% if the source material is recording at a low level. My source is 2vrms output and cans are all (properly damped) orthos.
  11. here's the cable Ric: The Enyo Silver Upgrade Cable for Ultimate Ears(Black/White) [Enyo_BW] - S$96.60 : Null Audio Studio, Where everything is purely handmade
  12. [fanboy]what antenna issue?[/fanboy]
  13. Actually, can I change to 2x RW2S0DA100RJE-ND (yeah, yeah, this is what PM is for)
  14. cool Nate, if it works out that would fantastic.
  15. if anyone happens to place a Digikey order any time soon, can I sneak two SMD resistors on it? grr.. looking for two 100 ohm, 2W SMD resistors at approx 4318 case size (i.e. PWR4318W1000JECT-ND)
  16. heh, yeah I'd assume Steve is correct
  17. The yokeless concept (either single or double ring) is an interesting one, and a better technical solution than the conventional MC design, and perhaps better than the unconventional designs (those being ZYX and Miyajima). I'll probably try one out at some point.
  18. true 'dat.
  19. Ordered a Null Audio Enyo JH cable today. I hope it doesn't suck.
  20. There's a zero percent chance I'll be able to make this one guys.

.. And floor space? Heh, I'm up for it Steve!
  23. Has anyone played with biasing capacitors that normally only see AC with a small amount of DC? I know some commercial speaker manufacturers have been doing this for a while (Vandersteen, Infinity, JBL, etc. comes to mind) usually using a battery and often accompanied by fancy marketing speak ("Charge-Coupled Linear Definition Dividing Network"). There is a lot of ink spilled on the subject, but what do you say?
  24. needs moar consensus!
