  1. Happy bday Andy
  2. I have both of the suggested ones. The bugle boy and the black plate mullard set me back a fair bit but the 421a and the 5814a seemed to sound the best - probably why they stayed in as a combo for over a year. I have the bugle boy in right now and its a very very clean sound. I don't want to call it clinical but it is colder than the hytron. Don't have a dremel tool but do have a drill. I'll see if I can hack up something from it. Or perhaps ask around my neighbors. Might throw in some 5998 or a 6AS7 for a different flavor tonight since I changed the input tube too. Needless to say a much cleaner sounding amp with the input tube replacement.
  3. after a year or so with this amp, my cbs/hytron 5814a seems to have stopped wanting to play clean noise. too much static and warbly noises continuously. Reseating the tube would help for a minute but once the tube warmed up, the noise would come back. I don't want anything too expensive as I already have a slew of tubes for the amp but I loved the sound of the hytron. is there anything similar to the tube anyone can suggest? i will probably get one of the hytrons as they aren't too costly but something new/similar to try out would be reasonable.
  4. Happy birthday sir
  5. Is that even enough clearance for the power cable? Don't know if the 1 cm was a serious number.
  6. Happy birthday sir
  7. I was going to wish everyone in Hindi but I don't think there is a Hindi word for Christmas. Oh well. Merry Christmas. Hope everyone enjoys a safe holiday.
  8. Anyone know about a sigma sa7n camera? Looks to be in pretty good condition. Comes with 28-80 and 70-300 lenses. Sigma mount. Lenses are in pretty good condition. $110? Want something decent and cheap to play with film. Something with decent resale value would be nice in case it doesn't go too well.
  9. i think the sfbags one will probably fit the bill perfectly. thanks all.
  10. what are the specs of this magical laptop? surely there are deals floating around these deals that are comparable. ill keep a look out even though you seem to have your ear closer to the ground with these things.
  11. The install disc needs to be aware of the Hdd controller though. Which if has some weird firmware or drivers that the installation media does not like it will keep throwing errors. Happened on a really old dell when I tried to change the Hdd. It may very well have been something else entirely but the drive worked elsewhere so I don't know what else it could have been. Second what john said. Ask for refund. If you get it take the money and save up for something more reliable. Otherwise settle for a replacement.
  12. I hate running around chasing Microsoft gremlins and usually format at the first site of trouble. Hate to say it but have you considered starting with a clean slate?
  13. We are all parroting! Happy birthday sir.
  14. found what i was looking for.
  15. what are you guys using to carry your macbook airs? mom and dad are both looking for something to travel to india with. they dont care for anything fancy. just something functional.
  16. i was wondering how mine said 45mb/s class 10 on it. i was halfway through an email to sandisk asking them to send me a class 45 card...
  17. a wee bit off topic but anyone using jh 16s with macbook air? no amps or dacs in the middle. just headphones straight into the laptop? i am getting more hiss than i do with my thinkpad. i keep hearing claims of completely black backgrounds but i cant get it. not on an iphone or ipad even. actually the ipad is the closest ive gotten to a dark background. the issue was brought up with mike when i went to his house to borrow a pico slim i think. he couldn't hear the noise i was hearing initially but following a seemingly random set of events he heard it. 1. plug in headphones into iphone while the phone is in sleep mode. 2. enter your password or swipe to get into the phone. 3. turn the headphone volume all the way up. 4. click on music but dont play any music. 5. if you don't hear the hiss already, keep the music app up for a few seconds and then click the home button to go back to the home screen. 6. wait for a few seconds before the audio link is cut out from the music app and you will hear a blimp and then complete silence. 7. if you were to go back into the music app, there would be a little blip and then the hiss will resume. should take a minute at most to do this and i would appreciate some feedback on the matter. the problem i have is that the hiss that mike heard at the highest volume (he didnt hear anything at the lowest volume) is what i hear the moment i plug in the headphones into anything - iphone, shuffle, ipad, ipod touch, thinkpad, and now mba regardless of the volume level. fwiw, i heard it on the pico slim with the iphone as well. ive gone to get hearing tests done a few times over the past few years because of tinnitus and ive always scored well above average even though the tests only go up to 8khz i think. the issue is not with high frequencies though which tinnitus might screw up the results for, but with a low hiss. almost like the constant hiss of a cassette in a walkman. in the mba, the same thing happens when i open itunes. for instance it is still there in the background but with itunes the hiss gets much more annoying and noticeable. if anyone has solutions on getting rid of this, please let me know. after hearing the crack + 650 on the mba i was reminded how pleasant a black background was and well what i had gotten used to over the past year has started bugging the shit out of me yet again. could i use some sort of adapter cable with a resistor inside or anything else to reduce the sensitivity of the phones? i tried emailing jaime about the issues a while back but she quoted jerry saying that he was using the jh16s with the macbook air with a completely black background. i dont claim to have golden ears - just that i might be able to hear part of the spectrum that they can't.
  18. i actually thought it was him under a different name on diya. but i guess the design has been adopted for sale by others who are selling built amps. didn't have all the facts before posting. nice casework though. very clean.
  19. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/swap-meet/198536-fs-o2-headphone-amp-assembled-boards.html hmm
  20. on a whim i just plugged in my amp into mom's mba. WTF. like really...that big of a difference between laptops? if only i hadnt spent a shit ton of money already 650s sounded so fucking amazing. such clean bass.
  21. the remote was just a joke but hey if it helps you then why not. it is only 10 bucks and supposedly works quite well. give it a try. if it doesnt work for you, send it back to amazon. there are a bunch of kits and bodies on sale over at fm... http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1069641/0?keyword=nex,5n#10174526 http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1069303/0?keyword=nex,5n#10170499 http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1068390/0?keyword=nex,5n#10160385 http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1068216/0?keyword=nex,5n#10158535 apparently the remote is not even 7 bucks... http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Remote-Control-NEX-5-RMT-DSLR1/dp/B00407YLEU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324362363&sr=8-1 i have a little strange little set up with my nex 5. lets see if i can find any pictures of it. oddly enough it forces my left hand to hold the camera in a way which is rather comfortable.
  22. wouldnt that be a nice place to live in...
  23. i have short fingers and find nex 5 give me a wee bit of trouble but not nearly as bad as you. how about the 10 dollar remote?
  24. i scoured the thread and could only find tom's opinions on the amp with hd650. not that i dont trust him, but has anyone else tried this amp with 650s? if so, any thoughts? anyone build both this and the crack (only amp i currently have)? any thoughts between the two? the build log over on the other site seems simple enough to where i could try it since everything is on a pcb but i just wanted to know how it played with the 650s before going ahead. i dont intend on getting any other headphones any time soon and while i enjoy the crack very much with the 650s, the high praise from others makes me want to try something that is relatively easy to build as i do find myself with a little bit of time these days during winter break.
