Bands you are discovering (old or new)

Featured Replies

Terrible name for a new thread (open to change). Bands you are dicovering new or old. For me its The Heads, Pharaoh Overlord and Stinking Lizaveta.

Listened to Mercan Dede on recommendation from Smeggy last night and can't stop. I now own everything he's done under that name.

I'm also trying to work my way through Bowie.

How about genres? Right now Texas Blues. Goes well with bourbon. ;)

The Rolling Stones

Never liked them back in the day.

Digging them now, working my way from Beggar's Banquet to Voodoo Lounge.

David Bowie, I've alway's listened to the odd track, but know I seem to be listening all the time. ( Probablly move on to someone else next week !!! )

Stormy Six. I always liked Rock in Opposition but somehow never listened to these guys. It was a very pleasant surprise when I "discovered" them :D

Trilok Gurtu, Nitin Sawhney, Franz Ferdinand.

I'd been getting back into Black Rebel Motorcycle Club after hearing and buying their latest SC (Baby81). Via listening on last.fm to similar, I had run across a few bands that I liked who I will probably be buying cds of...

The Black Angels

The Ravonettes

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

Shiny Toy Guns

The Warlocks

Girl in a Coma

The Duke Spirit

The Kills

Trilok Gurtu, Nitin Sawhney, Franz Ferdinand.

Trilok Gurtu is awesome especially the early stuff and CMP albums. He also played with Embryo and german drummer Peter Giger on some of his percussion extravaganza albums.

Starfucker - Just love this : Indie Portland band

Nada Surf : Indie NYC band

The Minutemen. I was always an East Coast and British Punk kinda guy. I mean I heard and liked Fear and the DK's, but somehow I totally missed the Minutemen. I picked up Double Nickel's on the Dime and it is just awesome.

ELO

I've been an ELO fan from the begining.

I use ELO as a reference on all new gear.

ELO is amazing!

New for me: Dan La Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Necks: trio from Austrailia, minimalist jazz. Each CD is one track. Just got Aether and Drive By. These guys are completely new to me, and I'd be really interested in what others might recommend, and/or have heard.

Gomez: been around awhile, but new to me. Listening to How We Operate right now, and I really like these guys. Open to suggestions to other CDs.

TalkTalk: revisiting, starting with Spirit of Eden.

Simple Acoustic Trio: Marcin Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkicwicz (bass) and Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Knew of some of the players through Tomasz Stanko's CDs and Manu Katch

The new one is pretty good.

Their first release -- from 1998 or so -- is also solid and it's interesting to see how they've evolved.

Great band. They've really captured an eclectic cross-section of music lovers, if the two shows I've been to are any indication.

My favorite by a mile is 2002's "In Our Gun". It's kind of a one-off from the rest of their oeuvre, but it's a solid album with lots of fun noises. Do give it a try.
