Ian, sounds a tiny bit like some of Caleb Carr's novels, have you read him?  If so, any comparison?

I haven't, but I'm always looking for something new.  If/when I get to them, I'll let you know how they compare.

Me:  somehow managed to start three books -- the aforementioned John Dies at the End (large paperback, does not travel well), Hide Me Among the Graves (via Kindle app on mah phoneblet, can read it anywhere and have it with me), and started the next Dresden Files novel, whose name escapes me.

I am totally digging it -- found it in my Kindle queue, but can't remember why I'm reading it.  I thought you recommended it.  Or maybe it was Neil Gaiman.  I forget...

it was probably me.  Tim Powers is my favorite author.

Last Saunders post [scouts honor], but NPR did a piece on him today. How she gets off pretending people haven't been talking about him for a decade I can't understand, but good run down of the stories in the collection if anyone is interested.

Three Days to Never

 

Can't find my copy of John Dies at the End, I think I was reading it right up until just a couple hours before I took off for San Francisco, but for the life of me, I can't recall where I went for breakfast/lunch, which is where I would have left it if I left it anywhere.

The Fifty Year Sword by Mark Z. Danielewski Quite entertaining, and a much easier read than the unorthodox formatting would leave you to believe (provided you don't get lost in it). It definitely makes me want to re-read House of Leaves.

Just finished this. Very good if you're interested in running or just biology in general. It digs into how animals, insects and humans overcome environment and endurance challenges from the cellular level and up. 

 

Prequels should generally always be read after the books written before it.
