Is the remaster better?

Hoo boy.  So the original members of Black Sabbath got together and recorded a new album.  I think they were inspired by RHCP.

  • its getting better, i think. Death Magnetic, and the criticism it drew over its mastering, was kind of the peak of the whole loudness wars. i've been pleased with the sound on a lot of new record

Ugh.  If you like the first two Chemical Brothers albums and want to keep on liking them, do yourself a favor and never look at the waveforms.

I've been staring, bleary-eyed at the 40 minute version The Orb's "Blue Room" for an hour now, trying to figure out if I can edit it down to something I can use on my radio show.  Conclusion: No.  Ale

Those Black Sabbath waveforms are insane. :o

Wow. Look at that brick wall.

That being said, I find with a lot of recent releases the vinyl release gets a way better (read: more dynamic) mix. Maybe once someone gets their hands on a vinyl copy they can report back?

There have been a few rips already.  Two are up on a certain Russian site, and another is up on a very well known vinyl ripping site.  PM me if you need a point in the right direction.

I just want to see some waveforms.

There is a "Mastered for iTunes" version, which is 256kbps AAC, of course. There's also a Japanese SHM-CD version. I am not sure if any of them are mastered any differently than the version I posted. I have the Best Buy 2CD version, FWIW.

After seeing Blacka Sabbath's work my eyes dropped off.

Pitty but i did not expected anything else from rick rubin.

Is Vlado Meller anywhere in credits?

Not my image (and, ahem, not my FONT CHOICE), but a painful comparison to to the original album and the "best of" remaster.

You were hoping for Comic Sans?

What is that? Chalkboard font?

And yeah, some people don't like the sound of their debut.  Too much reverb and sounds too much like arena rock.  I say screw that.  They NAILED the sound for that album.  Fit the mood perfectly.  I quite like the plain US CD issue, but I am sure the Z 47857 vinyl ripped by someone skilled would sound amazing.

The remix (remaster?) seems to be a higher DR, which looks good as a starter. Does it really sound better/different?

I don't know, I'd have to A/B them -- I'm still hearing some serious clipping, but (a) I'm still listening to it, so it is listenable, and (b ) I'm listening on a completely different system than I did then, so it be being euphonized.

Cheers for doing that, Graham.

Thought I'd compare it to Snakes and Ladders -- which, although very compressed, is still quite listenable.  I consider S&L to be compressed the way we would expect a contemporary rock'n'roll record to be -- perhaps a little harsh.  Vapor Trails Remixed is still worse.

OH DEAR LORD.  This isn't a remaster, but it illustrates what's wrong with buying techno on the web in 2013:
