  2. so what do we have here stax 717 in a strange huge metal case now the weight has increased from 5 kg to 11 kg I don't know who did it and why it seems like the case is made well, all the places for fastenings are made accurately but the weight... whoever did it seems to have no idea about the cost of international delivery of 1 kg by air... another strange thing is 2 side lemo connectors if we look at what is connected there, everything is simple this is 1 channel (left) is connected to one lemo and then the second lemo is connected to the 5 pin socket who and why did it - is a mystery to me tomorrow I will try to switch the jumpers to 220v and turn it on, and also connect the left channel back to the stax connector I wonder who and why brought the left channel outside the amplifier) it looks like there are no other modifications but I'm not sure about that...

He's a featured character in Jon Ronson's 2001 book Them: Adventures with Extremists (whether by luck or by some insight, Ronson has been ahead of this stuff for decades) On that topic, Ronson did a podcast series exploring the origins of lots of the culture war fights. Definitely worth a listen https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011cpr/episodes/player?page=1

  6. Hilarious three part The Dollop podcast on Bo Gritz who after serving in the Vietnam War, used a cheerleading camp, psychics, sex workers and Clint Eastwood's donations to "lead" various failed attempts to rescue MIA POWs that didn't exist (and that's just the first episode). Failing up as they say, he was a "hero" and was supposedly the inspiration for an A-Team character and several Chuck Norris films. Later he showed up at Ruby Ridge and ran for president with the slogan "God, guns, and Gritz". Ahead of your time there Bo. If only you waited until 2016. 8. Hey, hey. The Greeks led the way. The were the first to find the "back door".
  9. Did someone say ice cream? And a view?
  10. What about the Greeks, who seems have invented a lot of things. I asked, by the medium of mime, and the shopkeeper said, " For you my friend, special price, The "Mr. Steve" very special, not on display so as not to frighten the children"
  11. It's GRHV with either 325V or 330V secondaries (don't remember exactly), and I lowered the current limiting resistor to 3.6R I think.
  12. Thanks for the report. May I ask if you are using a GRHV supply? And is your transformer secondary around 330 VAC for the ±400 V rails? I just want to rule out whether my drop is caused by insufficient transformer headroom rather than the current limit itself.
  13. I see no drop under load at +/- 400V, so you might be just on the edge of your current limiting. I did run my XL at 33mA for a while which worked (and sounded) fine, but then changed back to 23mA to test some other stuff and right now it's dismantled for fitting of 2A3 heater supplies, so can't help with data points.
  14. Yup, this is nowhere close to the 007 or 009... it's fun novelty but not much more than that. I also have a few sets of drivers that I've only tested but never put into anything.
  15. Thanks a lot for the hint. Since I haven’t ordered the test resistors yet, I’ll probably need some time before I can try it out on a new build. But for today I did some measurements on the current operating point, and hopefully these numbers help add to the pool of data. For easy comparison, I’ll use your same format. Based on the WE datasheet, I think both of our Vgk values are on the shallow side, but as Kevin has mentioned, modern 300Bs vary a lot, so I’m not 100% sure if this is correct. It might make sense to raise the current to 33–34 mA, in which case the required Vgk would move down (according to the WE300B datasheet, Vgk at 34 mA / 400 V is about –90 V). My expectation is that as the current goes up, the offset also increases and Vgk becomes more negative. To bring the offset back to 0 V, you’d adjust Vg, but when Vg changes, Vgk may swing more positive again. If possible, it would be great if you could validate this in LTspice. One more observation: with ±400 V supply, under load I measured about 389 V. I’m not sure if this is simply normal drop or if my current-limit is engaging. Could you let me know if your ±400 V rails drop as well? If yours stay right at 400 V, then I probably need to tweak my current-limit detection resistors.
  16. ... and when the satellite company doesn't want their dish back, you can make a bird bath.
  17. I started posting this in the ambient/IDM thread and quickly realized I was talking about cats, not ambient music. I have mentioned Martin Strutzer to my (sainted, octogenarian) mother a number of times over the years, specially how he does live ambient "jams" while his incredibly well behaved cat sits patiently beside him. She asked me to play a video of him performing, and I found this one on the YouTubes: The cat does its job to a T. I continue to be amazed how cooperative it is. Compare to my attempts to DJ with the "help" of Ozzie the cat some 15 years ago: I never DJ'd around Heidi the cat, but I am positive I know what she'd have done if I did. It would NOT be "sit there patiently and wait to be petted."

  19. My first thought was a Schiit Mimir. I haven't heard one, so I didn't feel qualified to comment. Still, the price looks right and it might be a sideways upgrade (it may be too wide for your arrangement). All I've got is a tiny Schiit Fulla 2... it still sounds great. There's been a lot of new entrants in the field and I'm way out of date on new equipment. I listened to a Chord Mojo 2 but it didn't sound any better than my portable CD player's headphone output. The Benchmark DAC3 B would be the logical thing to compare, but they look expensive and I'm not sure it would be that much of an improvement. I've been curious about the Chord Qutest but it may be out of your budget range. Perhaps it's worth a trip to the local stereo shops?
  20. This is going to be fairly long walk (and a puerile one at that), without much point. Okay, maybe two points. Also, I'm not suggesting anyone actually watch any of these videos, other than to maybe skip around a bit. Remember Rebecca Black and her big vinral song "Friday" from 2011? Do not press play. You entire day will go better if you don't. The internet hated it, but gave it tens of millions of views (175M as of this writing.) Poor Rebecca was 14 at the time and not ready for the vitriol of the entire internet. She handled the whole situation far better than most, I think. Eight years later, BuzzFeed (bless their hearts) did a video on her as part of their "I became a meme" series: I actually did watch this when it came out. I don't remember much, except that Rebecca seemed pretty well adjusted. This is the Boiler Room. At one point the "premiere underground" broadcaster of electronic music. There was a time when they were THE hit thing and nearly every famous DJ wanted and in many cases did play on there. Their rise paralleled Rebecca Black chronologically. Even in they heyday, I had my suspicions. I have always viewed the world's most famous DJs with at best a significant reservations (Richie Hawtin) and at worst, unimaginable and unending scorn (David Guetta). Well, now how the mighty have fallen: This is the only video in this entire post I actually encourage anyone to watch. It's a pretty good synopsis of what made the Boiler Room good (if it ever was) and what a wretched corporatized state it exists in now. TIL (or, strictly speaking, YIL) Rebecca Black did a Boiler Room set last year. The whole thing missed me when it happened. I skipped around and it's weirdly fast vocal driven EDM and dear GOD am I not on the same page a club music this ...last 15 years. What I took away from this video is that Rebecca Black is now a fully grown woman in her late 20s and she has huge ...tracts of land. Of course [NSFW] there is a subreddit dedicated to her girl Fridays, which was the top result when I searched redderp for stuff on her Boiler Room set.
  21. ProTip: They normally tell you to be wary of places that don't have prices on the menu ... But "are you here to dine, drink, or dance?" Drinks.
