  1. Past hour
  2. Glad to see Alton Brown is back. Was a big fan of his original show.
  3. Today
  4. Had not made empanadas in a while. Decided that needed fixing so I defrosted some left over carnitas and that was that. Well, first I made a double batch of dough so I could make them more hand-pie sized. This was half of them.
  5. Finally getting around to American Gods, picking up where I left off (starting season 2).
  6. Windy Folk with a Brit twist. And just to shake things up
  7. Alton back doing Alton things - Alton cooks food...
  8. Yesterday
  9. My plate was almost as decadent
  10. Al and I just prepared Eggs Benedict for the Mayberry compound. I may have overdone it. See you all after a brief food coma.

A recording engineer friend of mine (drivin' n cryin' is one of the bands he records) swears by the Cascade Fethead ribbons

I don't have experience with a lot of ribbons, but I was fortunately stopped from going down that rabbit hole by my local professional musician friend, Dave, many years ago. There are a lot of ... not good ribbon mics in the budget area. And yes, I know "DIY" ≠ budget, but since ribbon mics are so easy to get wrong, I wouldn't. I have my beloved Shure KSM313, which I would recommend for string ensembles (and vocals, which was going to be my primary application), but they are not cheap, and a matched pair will be even worse. Instead of ribbons, you would do well getting a matched pair of large condensers, like a Rode NT2A. (I have two, but they're not matched...that said, if you're not adamant about imaging, you can always do a Blumlein pair, which doesn't require a matched pair, and yields a very comfy stereo playback experience.) General comment for both of you: I would recommend listening to grawk over me on this subject, he has far more experience in this. I even still have some of his hand-me-downs.

My only ribbon experience is kinda theoretical at this point. I bought a nohype stereo ribbon but haven’t found the right place to use it yet.

Thoughts on the Bumblebee DIY ribbons? I would use them for small string ensemble recording i have heard and really liked AEA R88, Royer SF24 and Coles 4038 ..
  16. Fritz!
  17. Brent is going to be so pissed off that you used his Olivia Newton John sweat bands. Keep up the good work! Also...

  19. I think most sound cards are ok. I haven’t researched much because I trust apogee and my main concern is capture, and I have the best in the world for that
  20. Last week
  21. Oh yeah, I figured I'd need a new mic(s) Any idea in that cheapo external soundcard I linked or the Soundblaster? Anything else I should look at? Hoping to loop in the midi inputs on our keyboard eventually as well, though I can do that on the Behringer I think.
  22. Ofc such metal piece cannot be placed inside driver, only outside of stator, your right.
  23. The Mavericks - What a Crying Shame RIP, Raul Malo
  24. There is no way to do that, that would have to be awfully thing metal and how would it be attached. If you attached it on the diaphragm side then it would short out the driver and it would simply cause more reflections on the other side
  25. You’ll get way better results for the price to just record the turntable output directly (post phono stage) receiver tape outs, rca splitters, etc to get a copy of the audio signal, then into whatever sound card or adc you’re using. that behringer mic is terrible, and is really just a known quantity for spectrum analysis.

Other people play music and I record it for the kind of recording I do this is in the running for the most d-_-b way to do it outside mics are dpa 4015 sub cardioids mics at a 90 degree angle to get room “space” next in are schoeps mk41v HyperCards at a 110 degree spacing to catch clarity and make up for being a little farther back than is ideal the football is a schoeps surround setup called double midside. It has a front and rear facing mic and then a 3d mic to add sides i can blend them or isolate any of them depending on how things turn out Sonosax recorder and preamp are basically the best battery powered options on the market, 12 channels of 192/32
  27. With Martin Parr’s recent passing, articles have resurfaced, including on a single vote getting him in Magnum. See how angry/joking photographers can get. “The other person to avoid was Martin Parr. As he put it, he was photographing a Magnum Annual Party for the first and last time – using a flash with a thing like a Styrofoam coffee cup on the end of it. My penile extension, he explained hopefully (but unsuccessfully) to any lady who passed by. I mean if Magnum had to hire someone to do the party pictures, did it have to be Martin? He’s clearly not as successful as we all thought, if he needs to do birthday parties, Bar Mitzvahs and weddings. I sincerely hope the Magnum blogsite goes down before he has a chance to post. I mean, if Magnum wanted to hire a party photographer, why couldn’t they have selected a nice ‘concerned photographer’ like Philip Jones Griffiths or Ian Berry to do them – photographers who photograph you with dignity and humanism and make you look good – instead of the appallingly ‘cynical’ and ‘ironic’ Parr? Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus did enough pictures at the MoMA of people looking demented without Parr adding to them.“
  28. My mistake - that green/yellow PCB part I mentioned is from the other side of driver (facing outside). So no changes here probably. Back to stators - I was wondering about covering it partially with some thin sheet of metal, to make more compression inside drivers (similar to drivers from 007). That would change tonality, but in which direction ...🤔
