You just got a new piece of gear (or entire system) and need to select one of your reference songs to see how you new gear fares; get your first impression. What do you play, and furthermore, why? Alternately, you attend a meet and sit at someone elses table. Same question.

This was announced some time in June. They put up samples of the upcoming album on their Myspace page today: Porcupine Tree on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads The stream quality is not very good, but I enjoyed what I heard A review from a listening session can be found here. Also it sounds like a 5.1 DVD-A is confirmed, which more than likely means a high res stereo PCM track on the same disc.

  6. A pair of prodigious platters of plastic. Sorry. Couldn't help myself. An alliterative illiterate. It's two 180 gram 33.33 rpm disks - beautiful, dead flat, silent, excellent sounding pressings, in proper audiophile plastic-lined inner sleeves (Somehow, when an album costs the best part of fifty bucks, I think a Nitty Gritty sleeve is in order. Thank you very much.) The sound is head and shoulders above the 44.1 digital version - guitar timber, vocal, just about everything. This is the first Junkies album since way back, Caution Horses or Black Eyed Man maybe, where the vinyl has sounded that much better than the CD for me. There's a bit of tape pre-echo (print-t…

I thought this article was pretty interesting, where US artists want to receive royalties for their songs being played on the radio. Here is the beginning of the article: Not sure how to feel about this one. What do you guys think? Should artists be getting royalties for their song being played on the radio? Artists want royalties for song being played on the radio

  8. Listen to the entire Dark Night of the Soul album over at NPR. "In addition to Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous), other artists appearing on Dark Night of the Soul include James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils."

I know nothing about classical music. I've picked up the following albums over the last few years at local record sales thinking I would try to get into classical. I've been listening to the local classical station and I'm trying to get into it but it's a bit overwhelming. Anyway, I'm curious if what I have is good in terms of whether those of you that are into classical would say, that's a great, good, bad, whatever version. I hope that makes sense. 10. All of the sudden I have become very interested in the Pre-Beethoven composers. It started with Bach's Mass In B-Minor (Gardiner) and moved on some of Haydn's symphonies (Sir Colin Davis). Beyond that all I have is whatever Mozart and Bach shows up on the Living Stereo releases. So any classical period or even earlier stuff you could recommend would be wonderful. I'm looking for specific recording recommendations, rather then "get mozart's 40th" type recommendations. Here is a small wish list I've compiled from various sources: Amazon.com: Jack Johnson: Classical Period Thanks!

I've been kinda wondering lately why nobody in audiophiledom seems to talk about rap. Do audiophiles just not like rap? Nobody seems to care about ripping CDs or bumping classics on vinyl, which doesn't make much sense to me, because rap is a very popular genre. It's weird, because obscure shit like tech death or black metal gets plenty of love on forums. But not rap? Well, rap is my second favorite genre after rock, and I hope some of y'all want to talk about it with me. I'm not really into that 80s bboy shit; my tastes only stretch back to early 90s gangsta. My personal favorite rap group has pretty much always been Jedi Mind Tricks, especially the Violent by Design …

In the Krautrock thread Tony mentioned Magma. Since Magma is Zeuhl and not Krautrock I volunteered to create this thread to talk about Zeuhl and related bands. I am not sure how many know what this Zeuhl stuff is all about so I will give a brief introduction and list a few bands/albums that I like. Zeuhl School basically amount to Magma influenced bands, but there is a lot of crossover into Gong and RIO territory as well. Zeuhl is an adjective in Koba

So I was trying to look up a recent purchase -- Prokofiev "premiere" recording of Queen of Spades with On Guard for Piece -- and I wandered over to their website which led me to their online store, which appears to sell (in British Pounds Sterling) lossless audio. Anyone know what resolution theirs are at? I see "24/96" on the corresponding CD page of most recordings that interest me, but the CD's are obviously not 24/96, and I see nothing on the audio download page.

The disquiet over Last.fm's founders making for the door added to the mess at eMusic makes this a crappy couple of weeks for online music services. (Although HDTracks advertising the Plant/Krause album in 24/96 would count as a piece piece of good news.) Anyway, for those who haven't heard, eMusic signed a deal with Sony for all or most of the more-than-three-year-old content in Sony's library. That pissed off their die hard "indie" customers. At the same time they announced a price hike that amounts to just a hair under or over 100% for their oldest and most loyal customers. If that wasn't enough, their communications were a PR train wreck, and if anybody had misse…
