For those of you who are living under a rock, Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong album is now out, got myself a copy the day it was released. Yes it's a christmas album, but it's got Sarah special touch, I actually like it more than her Afterglow album. Also out on CD is the full uncut version of Mirroball, this is a 2 CD set that contains the entire concert set. Yeah there's overlap with the Afterglow Live CD/DVD set but it's different enough to be worth it. While I was at the store I also saw the A Piano: the Collection which is the Tori Amos box set that comes in a piano keyboard. I didn't buy it but I took a look at the track listings and it seems pretty interesting. I'l…

I'm startin down the rippin road. I need to unload a batch of older CDs and am ripping them with EAC. My assumptions for using flac.exe to do this are: * There is no upsampling feature I can use with EAC (from 16/44 to 24/96) * The flac file format should be fairly future-safe. * I can play flac files on many DACs that I may be able to buy today. I am also assuming that when I read about others here with a 24/96 flac file that the file was first a 24/96 WAV which was then compressed to 24/96 flac. Is that correct? (Or is there a way to do this in a batch process maybe with Adobe Audition? Probably. ) My real question is: are my assumptions correct…

Found this on YouTube via Facebook, the full concert without all of the overdubbing and post-processing that mucked up the commercial version that I've been listening to for nearly 40 years now. Whether there is a God or not, I sure hope this gets put out on vinyl soon... very soon! I could care less about the 'footage' in terms of the video, it's the audio that sounds amazing! So I'm buying some stuff on amazon and this little gem catches my attention: Because hey, isn't that my main man, my favorite post-punker, the living representation of everything that makes music GOOD, mr Mark E. Smith of The Fall? And who are those other two cats with him? According to the blurb: "This is the debut by a trio formed by Mark E. Smith of The Fall along with Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars. It combines the genre-smashing attack of early millennia club music with Smith's free-associating visionary wordplay. The riffs and rhythms come together from many different places, with synths, samplers, and sequencers all firing off. It's not a b…

Back in the '90s, my favourite hi-fi store was selling high-end gear made by a small Australian company, named after its founder, Kostas Metaxas. At the time it was impressively better than famous brand names (in Australia at least) for what they were asking. They certainly were pretty hard-core about their designs, for example: Anyway, aside from that, I found they had put up some recording samples they'd made of jazz and classical, which, apart from a considerably amount of background hiss, are pretty good. Metaxas Audio Systems Hope you all enjoy them.

Anyone have any predictions? Or how about actual knowledge? SACD has firmly entrenched itself as a niche market...and getting "nicher". Are either HD-DVD or BluRay going to carry high-res audio, either high-rate PCM or DSD? (Can you tell I just read in this month's Stereophile the "As We See It"?) I WANT MY HIGH-RES!!!1!

One constant among all discussions I read on audiophile fora is the back-and-forth between older enthusiasts who have spent $800 on Pet Sounds and younger enthusiasts who have spent $0 pirating video game soundtracks. I think the best way to bridge that gap is to put everyone on a level playing field. If you would, please share some examples of albums you love that were first released before you were born. For my part, here are five to get us started. 1) Ahmad Jamal: Chamber Music of the New Jazz This is a phenomenal recording, showing really thoughtful playing by Jamal. I'm particularly fond of the rhythmic tapping and string plucking he employs t…

I know from posts in the Listening thread there are members that still subscribe to B&W's Society of Sound, but it's been many years since it's been discussed and a few since an album has been released I cared much about (to be fair that's coupled with the raise of streaming services). Anyway, my subscription is about to expire and curious if others are still excited about their 24-bit releases?

I am a big fan of the ECM and MA Records labels. I have found most of the recordings from these labels have great music detail and mixing, especially anything Todd mixes over at MA Records is exceptional in sonic quality. My dilemma is that both labels are very deep in talent and have many CDs available and I am reluctant to just randomly pick CDs without knowing what I am getting. Both labels have an eclectic roster of talent but some of it is just a little bit out there for me at this point and I would rather not buy a CD just to have to wait a while for it to grow on me. Any recommendations? What artists have you purchased and liked?

Paul Motian passed away a week ago and Fresh Air had a nice tribute/older interview that hit upon Bill Evans, Monk, and Keith Jarrett. Worth a listen. "I'm not a showpiece drummer. ... I feel like I'm an accompanist. It's my sort of thing to make the other people sound good, as good as they can be. I feel like I should accompany them, and I should accompany the sound that I am hearing and make it the best that I can — that I can do."

  23. Anyone here try any of the Mosaic jazz collections instead of getting all the discs from Amazon? I'm wondering if these are better masters than the standard discs, or just a prettier face. Most of them I've looked at are remastered from the original master tapes, often at 20 bit. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=197-A-MD-CD I usually just buy all the albums of an artist, so I dont know what to make of these yet.

  24. You know how it goes -- the album would be perfect if it weren't for this one track, or these two tracks, or whatnot. (This is actually just an excuse to get rid of some of my favourite albums from my insanely long list.) Deep Purple, Who Do We Think We Are? -- fine up until "Place In Line", which totally drags things down, and doesn't get much better with "Our Lady". King Crimson, Red -- would've been fine if they had just put something more "Fractured"-like instead of the unorthodox improvisation of "Providence". Talking Heads, Remain in Light -- this one pains me, because I really don't understand my dislike of "Once in a Lifetime", but I just don't -- I can liste…
