From Kumbaya to Hammer Smashed Face.

  1. Anyone here try any of the Mosaic jazz collections instead of getting all the discs from Amazon? I'm wondering if these are better masters than the standard discs, or just a prettier face. Most of them I've looked at are remastered from the original master tapes, often at 20 bit. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=197-A-MD-CD I usually just buy all the albums of an artist, so I dont know what to make of these yet.

So I'm buying some stuff on amazon and this little gem catches my attention: Because hey, isn't that my main man, my favorite post-punker, the living representation of everything that makes music GOOD, mr Mark E. Smith of The Fall? And who are those other two cats with him? According to the blurb: "This is the debut by a trio formed by Mark E. Smith of The Fall along with Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars. It combines the genre-smashing attack of early millennia club music with Smith's free-associating visionary wordplay. The riffs and rhythms come together from many different places, with synths, samplers, and sequencers all firing off. It's not a b…

  5. Is the mastering on the LP version as horribly compressed as it is on the CD or does it actually have a little dynamic range?

See this article [NYTimes] for information on early 'pop' music. Much is available from UCSB. FOR a couple of months now my iPod has been stuck on Stella Mayhew's "I'm Looking for Something to Eat." It's a lurching little waltz-time pop tune, drawled over brass-band accompaniment. The lyric is hilarious, the lament of a gal on a diet who can't stop eating, and it climaxes with a glutton's soul cry: "I want some radishes and olives, speckled trout and cantaloupe and cauliflower/ Some mutton broth and deviled crabs and clams and Irish stew." I can't get it out of my head ? so far, it's my favorite record of 2006. As it happens, it's also my favorite record of 1909.…

  8. I recently picked up couple albums from Johnny Cash's American Recording series (specifically, III and IV). I was excited about it as I've been meaning to get them for a while. To my dissapointment, both albums sounded terrible, sounding really "hot" at many places with distortions. My questions is, are there good versions of the American Recording series? I really want to listen to them, but I just can't get over the distortions.

Me and a couple of friends spent today attempting to record some trip-hop. It didn't really end up sounding anything like trip-hop, and we're probably going to rerecord most of the parts because they're a little sloppy, but I think it actually turned out pretty well. I'm curious as to what you guys think. http://www.mediafire.com/?dudsxc1151v I just did the intro part, but I'll probably do some bass on it eventually.

I am grooving to this old Paul Van Dyk album, "Out There And Back" (to be fair, this isn't actually my old copy, I did own one in high school and lost it to the ravages of college, I picked up this copy from someone on HF), and am looking for some more trancey pulsating dreamy atmospheric beat and bass heavy music. I plugged Van Dyk into Pandora and Tiesto came up. I've noticed some of you posting Tiesto discs in the "listening to" thread. The album that came up on Pandora was "Nyana". Thanks!

I was really interested in this at first and held off, having listened to the Tidal stream of the record I am generally impressed. It fucks with a masterpiece but is a really goo modern take IMO. Anyone here own the record or the ridiculous deluxe $100+ version with DVD and Blu ray? I am interested in any gains with the 24/96 but not sure I want to spend the cash on it unheard.

  12. You know how it goes -- the album would be perfect if it weren't for this one track, or these two tracks, or whatnot. (This is actually just an excuse to get rid of some of my favourite albums from my insanely long list.) Deep Purple, Who Do We Think We Are? -- fine up until "Place In Line", which totally drags things down, and doesn't get much better with "Our Lady". King Crimson, Red -- would've been fine if they had just put something more "Fractured"-like instead of the unorthodox improvisation of "Providence". Talking Heads, Remain in Light -- this one pains me, because I really don't understand my dislike of "Once in a Lifetime", but I just don't -- I can liste…

Since we here have the coolest feature i seen on any forums being the ability to embed video in the threads directly I figure we need a Music Video thread. this thread is for any video that was done in the 80's. the 80's were the high light of music videos and 80's music is pretty wild and stretched... The first Video is From Morris Day and his "Jungle Love" video he may be best known for. Little do people know Day went to high school with Prince...who cares the song Rocks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irimNjHPS9c

  21. Worthy of picking up. Much improved instrument presentation and "crispiness" of the sound. Good re-master. Haven't listen to the bonus material, including the second CD of live at the Elyse'e. Will report back once I listen to everything.

I happen to like music that can be broadly categorized as "shoegazing" and "noise-pop." So if anyone else is a fan of such genres, and who's also in the DC/MD/VA area, there is a local music fest full of bands who make music in those genres: MySpace.com - DNA in the DNA Radio WMUC Radio 88.1 FM - 101 - Male - COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - www.myspace.com/dnainthedna I've seen a couple of these bands live before, and while they are by no means mind-blowing, they are pretty decent, IMO.
