  1. I recently bought this for my own SR-Lambda. Your country's stax distributor should be able to get it for you at a reasonable price (about 20 dollars if I remember right). Stax still has stock of it.

  2. I built the amp on a heat sink taken from an old Denon home theater receiver, and decided to try it out before investing more time and $$ on a 'real' enclosure. It just so happens that the heat sink has the exact length for two boards mounted side-by-side, and width to mount the transistors on both the PSU and amp boards. The big electrolytic caps are mounted on the opposite side of the PSU board to double as temporary mechanical support. You can see the green Soviet military style HV transformer. I got it a number of years ago on ebay when the international shipping wasn't that crazy. It's better suited for circuit requiring 400V or 350V B+, though.

  3. some new(ish) stuff that's been on repeat for me: Mizmor - Cairn Chrch - Light Will Consume Us All Vanum - Ageless Fire Vukari - Aevum Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race general theme of the first four is a great sense of atmosphere. i'd find it hard to categorize any of them in a specific subgenre (well i guess mizmor and chrch are pretty solidly doom). blood incantation is just incredible. best pure death metal going right now.

  4. Congratulations to your successful build of the Carbon. The world needs more good amplifiers. Do you mind post some images?

  5. I was lucky enough to have a long email conversation with him around 10 years back. That was where he shared the bet with Widlar. He actually contacted me, because he worked out that (feel sorry for my wife at this point) I am a Tektronix test gear collector and restorer as a hobby. The conversation moved progressively to AI, which he was agnostic about - but he reckoned the future was in Augmented Reality, where embedded computer systems would elevate our processing power and intellect. And here we are thinking 5G is a shiny new thing... A hell of a thinker was Barrie Gilbert.

  6. So, I actually have a miniDSP EARS. I don't particularly like posting measurements from it since it is notoriously unreliable due to improper acoustic impedance as well as a couple other issues. I decided to measure ES-1a and compare it to a couple of the headphones that have been mentioned in here so far. These are not industry standard measurements and should not be treated as such. They are highly unreliable and should be completely disregarded above 2-ish Khz. Lower if you want to be conservative. You will also notice some wiggling in the FR at low frequencies due to room noise, especially for the 007 measurements, this is not an accurate representation of the bass. SPL these are aligned at is not the actual SPL used for measurement, and note the much more compressed scale than what is commonly used, this will exaggerate things that are otherwise not problematic. Compensation used is HPN. ES-1a (dark pads) and L700 (stock) ES-1a (dark pads) and 007 (blu-tack modded) ES-1a (dark pads) and 404LE (not quite perfect seal, creates the bass rise) ES-1a (dark pads) and ES-1a (stock pads) All these measurements have 1/12th octave smoothing, I consider that most accurate to what you as a human will hear. I'm happy to provide unsmoothed plots if anyone wishes for it though. Note that this has the midrange coloration that is much more in line with 007 than the lambdas. It still benefits from bringing down the midrange a notch in EQ. The null at 5Khz is audible with sine sweep but I do not hear it in normal music listening. Once again: EARS is highly unreliable and should only be trusted below 2Khz where it is mostly accurate. Also note that very slight position changes will alter the treble response especially much.

  7. Always wanted to build one of those, still think about it from time to but I've got too much stuff as it is. Maybe if I find a second audio room or something...
