LG 27GL83A-B 27 Inch Ultragear QHD IPS 1ms NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible Gaming Monitor $285 at BozosLand. $15 cheaper than it was on prime day. My only hesitation in buying it is that the cost for a GPU capable of driving it is "lol"3 points

I had this pair, and it works VERY well.....ultimately, still a bit of artificial edge to the Utopia's for my taste, but they really are something special! I gave up some of that ultimate transparency in getting the Clear, but tonally it matched my taste a bit better. Still an incredible headphone, and the ecp amp is spectacular with it!2 points

I am currently running them through the GS-X MK2 and the treble is straddling that fine line between hotness and resolve. I have a DIY Beta22 and it's a bit better in this regard, the treble is not as resolving but the attack/edge/bite is softened a bit. Justin told me that the GS-X Mini is supposed to sound warmer and may be a better fit with the Utopia. There is also @dsavitsk's DSHA-3F that's supposed to be a great pairing with the Utopia but I haven't heard this personally.2 points

^ nice - I remember schizophrenic moon well. Listening to Dr. D in the 80s. Wagner: Götterdämmerung, WWV 86d & Tristan und Isolde, WWV 90 (Excerpts) Charles Munch 2016 Just 2 tracks - here is one of them: (how can people still record things so badly when they could do this in 1958?)1 point

I finally sold my Utopia. I just wasn't using it enough. Yes it was very impressive, but it was far too fatiguing, and a $4k headphone that you could only use 30 minutes at a time wasn't worth keeping. Sadly, I think the Clear falls under the same category too, I can listen to it for longer than the Utopia (1-2 hours) but still it's not an all-day headphone. I don't know what it is about Focals, but they seem to irritate my ears in ways that other headphones don't. Regarding the DSHA-3F, it is a very transparent and resolving amp, and if you want to max out the Utopia's resolution, go with that. But it doesn't really change what the Utopia is. And you find the Utopia borderline, the Clear with the DSHA-3F is nearly as resolving (the highs are worse, but the mids and bass are similar) and definitely less abrasive. You could also try a bit of EQ, the Utopia does have a narrow 6khz peak and exaggerates treble past 13-14khz by about 6db or so. But to me that only mellowed it out a little bit. So, I think I'm leaving team Focal, since my ears refuse to cooperate.1 point

el84? - the spec sheets says thats 0.76A per valve for the heater.... http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0028.htm T2 and most of kevins designs are EL34. EL34 is around 1.5A to 1.6A heater per valve. http://www.r-type.org/exhib/abv0058.htm As craig says its around 3A for a pair and separate heater windings for each channel... I use transformer windings rated at 4.5A and the extra 1.5A is simply a safety margin. Heater current draw will be higher when the heaters are cold (less resistance) but the current draw will decrease within a minute or as the heaters heat up and reach steady state. I aim for 50% margin on the transformer heater windings. I like to run the el34 heaters at 6V rather than 6.3 for longer life.1 point

Interestingly the data sheet is inconsistent. It says 20AWG and 0.05mm^s in the title block, but 0.5mm^2 in the main drawing (which is the correct number) Anyway, assuming it is 0.5mm^2, that is 0.033 ohms per metre or 0.066 ohms loop resistance assuming 1m long umbilicals. The output tube pair takes 0.9A, so the voltage drop along the wires will be 0.9 x 0.066 = 0.06V. So that wire looks just fine ================================= Correction Wrong current! I looked up 6AC7 rather than 6CA7. Correct current per pair is 3A. So the voltage drop is 3 x 0.066 = 0.2V, which is a bit more significant.1 point

I have that monitor and quite like it; it doesn't take much adjustment of settings to get it looking its best. I got it before my new GPU arrived, and even on games running at lower FPS due to the resolution jump, it was still impressive how much smoother everything felt.1 point

Yes - I use the same PTFE coated wire, 600V rated. So from one conductor to another it should be 1200V. The maximum difference is from -500V to +500V - so 1000V. In fact it is a bit more, because there is a -560V line, so 1060V. Now in all likelihood the insulation will be OK. But I decided to double insulate the heater wires at -500V just to be sure. But hey guys - just telling you what I did with mine. Whatever works for you is OK with me.1 point

personally I use cal test silicon test lead wire. Its cat IV rated at 1KV , very flexible and can withstand 180C. Its also just copper strands with no plating. (I find almost anything silver plated to be bright sounding and have banned anything silver or silver plated from hifi). I also arrange the wiring to the plugs and sockets so that + voltages go in the top half, grounds and zero volts in a line through the middle and - voltages in the bottom half. This keeps the potential difference between any two pins to a minimum. when possible I leave unused pins around any especially high voltages. I also test with a insulation tester. At 1000V the insulation resistance must be off the scale and there must be >50Gohms resistance at 2500V between all adjacent wires. https://www.uni-trend.com/html/product/tyyq/Electrical/UT510_Series/UT513A.html1 point

Cleaned up the boat a bit and re-epoxied the mast (comp-tip). Sadly McMaster-Care might have messed up my order (a first!) and I am missing two stainless steel bolts.. Barkeepers Friend worked quite well on the trampolines. I used 3M Perfect-It for both the anti-slip and sides - the Medium cut didn’t mess with the decals. Waiting for my new TX numbers to arrive in the mail..1 point
