  1. While waiting for the replacement I today brought forward my home-built headphone which has been stoved away for a year or so. It sounds really good, even better than I remembered. Perhaps it ages as a good wine. Wonder what happens if I put it away in our wine cellar for a couple of more years? Original home-built Faulty Stax

  3. I said “wow” out loud when I dropped the needle on the EP. And I say that as somebody who has a copy of RAM signed in pencil by Sir Paul.

  9. The 2sa1486 from little diode are 100% fake. They are pretty scummy.

  10. Until trusted person gives a reliable review here, you might study the interior of the new Stax SR-X9000. I let the pictures speak for themselves.

  11. Frankie and his hi-fi: I'm guessing it's a hybrid stereo/mono system vs "Dolby 3 channel." That a Mac pre, clearly. This article goes over some of the other kit. The, ahem, bowl of cigarette packs is a nice touch.

  12. His PR team is glad you noticed. They put it there specifically to get a reaction and to distract from his lack of empathy. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/29/style/mark-zuckerberg-meta-jokes.html

  16. I agree with both of those. I *have* had good components from both, but also fakes. The worst was my original T2 build, when I bought 2SC3675's from Nikko (it was called Dalbani back then). They were fake, with low breakdown voltage. There were sparks when I turned the T2 on the first time. Major collateral damage - it killed all the lateral FETs too and a bunch of other stuff. So in particular avoid those suppliers. I bought fake MT200 package power transistors from an eBay seller (neither of the above). I fortunately tested them on a curve tracer before using them. Low breakdown voltage (150V instead of 250V) and heavy beta modulation. Cracked one open and found a tiny piece of silicon in there 10% the area of a genuine part. Reported it to eBay - absolutely no action. As far as I know he is still selling them.

  18. Just talked to my Mother this morning. My Brother is completely unresponsive. He's been this way for over 12 hrs. now. He's still breathing on his own, but basically in a comatose state. Maybe he will pass peacefully. My Sister in law held her phone to my Brother's ear, so that my Mother could say goodbye. She felt good that she was able to do that. She's holding it together better than I expected at this stage.

  19. He just signed a do not resuscitate order, which is way out of character for my Brother. So that tells me that he's given up. Hopefully he'll just go to sleep and not wake. I really hope it doesn't drag on. My Mom is really having a rough time. Last week they had a big scare with her husband. Out of nowhere he started having really bad dizzy spells and couldn't stand or walk. Thankfully it turned out to be Vertigo, and he's doing much better now. In the last 4 years, they've done a complete turn around. She was the one that did all the shopping, the laundry and all of those day to day chores. He stayed glued to his computer playing video games. Now she can't do those chores because of COPD and some chronic back pain (still undiagnosed). Thankfully, he has stepped right into those roles without complaint (something that absolutely flabbergasted me). So I know she was worried what would happen should he not be able to continue that. Then just when that news got brighter, my Brother took another hard dive medically. My Mom was that Mother you see on those old 50's TV shows. Everything she did was for her kids. Selfless doesn't even begin to describe her, and to now see her struggling in her later years is just really tough. Life just isn't fair. OK, I'm done rambling for now. Thanks for being there!

  20. Well… I’ve finished the work with the new headphone and it ended in a disaster. I decided to resolder all solder points, so I took the driver package a part. Even removed the small cable connector. After cleaning all solder points, I connect outer stator and put into its position. It was a bit tricky to arrange the short wire in the connector house. Next was the diaphragm and here I made the disastrous mistake and got a scratch on the membrane when I should solder its wire. I guess I’m getting to old and clumsy for this kind of delicate work. Nowadays I have to wear headband magnifier which also makes it more difficult. Anyhow, I finished the assembly and have one good side and one bad with a small defect on membrane. After visual inspection with good light and magifier I don’t think the lower loudness had anything with dust or any foreign particles to do nor bad connections. So, I really should had waited for this… Thanks a lot, Wachara and Birgir!
