  5. Was talking to my Mom on the phone, when something flew in the front door. I caught it out of my peripheral vision. Assumed it was a big moth, so I kept talking to my Mom. Once I hung up, I went into the bedroom to investigate. Whatever it was, Suzy had it trapped under a nightstand. I flushed it out, to find it was a big ol' scrubjay. Took a little work, but got the poor bird back outside relatively unscathed.

  6. After seeing the new hotness it is pretty wild going 20+ years back in time to the older gen destroyers.

  7. I tend to buy in bulk when something is available (for expensive components: double what I need for a build, for inexpensive components like resistors, diodes, zeners, bc5XX, KSP92/42 transistors etc I buy 100), because: 1. bulk discounts, 2. free shipping if you spend above a certain level, 3. useful to have spares so if you make a mistake in building it initially or in 10 or 20 years time you can still service and repair the amp... 4. you never know when the there will be more stock. 5. you can sometimes swap parts with other people 6, you never know when ON semiconductor will delete the component or take over the manufacturer (as they did with Toshiba) and then delete all the useful parts 7. component prices only go up especially when they are no longer manufactured 8. you are less reliant on ebay or other doggy sources of possibly fake components. 9, more choices if you need matched pairs, or need high hfe/Beta etc I keep my inventory in an excel spreadsheet, so I know what I have and what I am getting low on. I also add to the sheet what build(s) each component is used in. Which helps with making decisions on quantities and buying priorities. for example I have 24x 10m90s because they are used in the golden reference hv psu - which I use in every build I can and are used in the modern t2 psu, T2 amp, and blue hawaii...

  9. Love me some Panamanian! I shifted away from darker roasts many a year ago, ER. Found the medium roasts were more to my liking, but I was using a French press solely at the time. I'm still of the same ilk but use the Chemex these days almost exclusively. Once retirement comes and I get a proper espresso maker I might be more inclined to darker roasts again...TBD. The Yemeni Levercraft I had at Grawk's recommendation a few years back was special....very Cherry forward. Pricey but I got it. Love me fruit forward coffees...Ethiopians are the top of the heap for me thus far. Sipping on this at the moment... HS

  10. We have every other form of cooking thread, so why not baking? I'll start with today's lunch, leftover from last night's dinner ... Clearly nobody is going to hire me for my crimping (or photography) skills. But they were delicious nevertheless. The crust is a rough puff pastry made with 1/2 whole rye flour. The filling is yellow potatoes, peas, green onions, and chevre.

  11. Thanks, guys. Just seeing this now. Been AWOL for a while, but doing great. Birthday was kind of a blur, driving from Illinois to Florida to get my pickup back into storage and then to return to Cayman. Back now, getting ready for jolly season. 59 and thankful for every one of them so far. At some point I'll need to cave in and admit I've become an old fuck.

  12. I have seen videos on YouTube explaining how to replace ear pads on their planar magnetic headphones and the comments were that the glue residue is not as difficult to remove as many believe.

  16. I'm not a fan of the glue either (having refurbed way too many Stax sets over the years) but at least they are using the super nice 3M glue which is not a pain to clean up. The Stax stuff, especially the stuff from the 80's, is super nasty

  17. Too many variables to really know what is what: first pour over of this bean. First use of the new dripper. First use of the new kettle in a pour over. First use of the new filters (CAFEC), first use of the new server. Slightly too fine (I forgot to recenter the fine adjustment on the OG when I went back to pour over: it worked out): it stalled out at the end. 1:15 with a 20 gram dose. Flavor profile is right in line with the espresso I made from this Gesha. Bright, floral, deep, rich. Delicate but sort of silly. This was a delicious cup of coffee. And talk about zero retention. 20 in, 20 out.

  21. I finally opened my Levercraft Panamanian Gesha. 16.5 in, 40 out in 48 seconds (longer pulls are normal for manual machines, and that includes pre infusion:I used the Flair Pro2 head). I flow controlled: pre-infusion, ramp to 3 for 10 seconds, fast ramp up to 7, then a slow decrease to finish. I find that works well for light roasts. The OG gave me as fluffy a grind as you could want. This coffee was roasted 9/21. I have never had Gesha before. I dunno if it was the beans or the fact that I’m really getting good with the Flair, but it was absurdly delicious, if you like very light roasts. I’ll be thinking of this shot for a while. And it was pretty. Not quite fine enough for stripes. Puck was slightly wet on top but knocked clean in one piece. The damp puck heads seem to be normal with the Pro2 brewhead. The “classic Flair” brewheads are usually as dry as you could want, but don’t make as good of coffee. I’ll be thinking about this espresso shot for a while.

  25. I built my sister a redwood clad mailbox stand Then Steve and I tried to dig post holes in dry, compacted dirt before hiring a guy named Sergio to do that task. We set the posts with a high tech expanding foam product made by Sika that worked great. It is in a bag with two bladders that you pop to combine and then pour in the hole. It works very fast and was set in three minutes. No bracing and waiting for concrete to set.. The best part is that Home Depot had marked down these bags from $10 to $2.38 and when I checked out they were rung up as $0.01 each. Two cents for footings is pretty cheap.

  28. A very pretty shot: 17.5 in 40 out in 32 seconds. Ethiopian anaerobic. Ground with the OG (I would go a little finer next time). Hoo boy this coffee is both delicious and really difficult.
