  1. You mean like the mythical D400? I'm happy enough with my D300 that I won't upgrade, but the D400 is beyond long overdue.
  2. Okay, so these aren't headphones but they are supposed to be STAX speakers, and at $750? http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649045576-stax_electrostatic_speakers/
  3. Happy Birthday Colin! (or as we say here, Bonne fête!)
  4. Once I learned the value of bounce flash I enjoyed indoor photography a lot more!
  5. +1 for VMWare Fusion. I've been using it since version 3. My only dislike is that upgrades are not free (sometimes they don't even offer upgrade pricing) but I don't think that Parallels is any different. I run Windows XP on it with no problems. For me the big draw is that I can make VM's that can be run on Windows, Mac, or Linux (Parallels can probably do this too but it's quite easy in VMware Fusion). Very handy for when I teach courses in data processing and can just hand students a USB key with everything they need pre-installed on a Linux VM.
  6. I use the Voyager Pro HD: http://www.plantronics.com/ca/product/voyager-pro-hd I really like mine, and it spends about half of the day on my ear. It has multipoint, so I have it connected to both my iPhone and my landline (which has a bluetooth feature) and I can take calls on both. It plays well with Siri and the iPhone and, has a sensor that tells the iPhone when the headset is on your ear (allowing the iPhone to route the call to the headset).
  7. What were the QC issues with the SZ-1s?
  8. When I used to drink vodka (10 years ago), I was fairly confident I could taste the difference between Absolut (which seemed smoother) and Smirnoff. Of course, that was a 'sighted' test
  9. Hang in there, Dusty. Best wishes for you and your kitty - I'm sure she's comforted by having such a caring 'dad' to take care of her.
  10. Just saw your post - I know KR's site (and yeah, some of his reviews need a pile of salt) but I don't think I've read that UWA article yet. Reading material for tonight's plane ride! That photo, and the sharpness, is incredible! Did you do much in post? It looks sharper than when I had my Nikon 2x (TC-III) with 70-200 2.8!
  11. An excellent cat person indeed. We have three, and our attempts to bathe them have ended with tears and recriminations all around.

    Deals

Excellent deal, and everything (except the car adapter) looks OEM, but then there's the recent seizure of counterfeit lightning cables that's worth keeping in mind: http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/more-635000-counterfeit-apple-products-seized-anchorage
  13. I'd recommend against the Spyder line of products. I have a Spyder 3, which I tried to use on my Macbook Pro, and my Mac Mini/Panasonic TV. On both, the Spyder gives an obvious red tinge. Datacolor's technical support is terrible, so I've not be able to do much about it (except not use the colorimeter).
  14. I found a bit more out about Joe Beef... reservations are a month or so in advance (earliest I could get was late Feb) and the menu changes daily. So, I'll have more to report in a couple months
  15. DAMN. Considering that Joe Beef is 20 minutes from my work, and I'm currently on a low-carb diet, I'll be going there soon!
  16. Looks amazing! How do you get it to 'hold' together? No Whole Foods near us, but they sell du Breton (a local farm group) black forest bacon:
  17. I just call them DEs or ODEs when I teach, but it's a chemistry course so we're not too focussed on the math.
  18. It's probably mostly water gain (at least, that's what my experiences are) - I'm sure it'll come off quickly!
  19. Picked up my Stax rig, that had been sitting in storage for the past year at the in-laws. When we moved from Toronto to Montreal, it was one of the things I had to leave behind... but now that it looks like we are staying in Montreal permanently, so the Stax will see some use
  20. I had the Tokina 12/24 f4 for a couple of years with my D300. The lens I had was the 'motor drive' version (does the D7000 have a motor or is it only SWM?). It was a great lens, built like a friggin tank, and the colour, focus, etc., were all up to muster. The only reason I sold it was because I didn't know (and still don't know) how to properly shoot wide angle...
  21. I gave Amarra a try today (the regular version, not 'hifi'). Thing is, I can't really tell a difference between Amarra and iTunes regular playback - I'm playing mostly 320 kbps MP3s, with the occasional apple lossless file. I've kept the EQ off in Amarra. I've read reviews from around the web (and much of this thread) on Amarra ranging from 'couldn't tell the difference' to 'sounds much better than stock iTunes'... which makes me think I might be missing something here. How subtle is the difference? Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but I'm using a gamma2 (via USB) as a DAC, limited to 16-bit/48 kHz (and currently set to 44.1 kHz), connected to a Pico Slim/SE535. Any insights from the longtime Amarra users would be greatly appreciated. Sameer
  22. I bought AppleCare when I bought my 15" MBP two years ago, because the laptop was expensive as heck and I didn't want to lose my investment (also, AppleCare is cheaper if you have a edu discount, which I do). Ironically, the only problem I had with the laptop happened last month, and it was a documented problem (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088) with the 2010 MBPs that Apple was fixing for free, *even if one didn't buy Applecare*. So, I wouldn't bother getting AppleCare if I bought a 13.3 inch air - no moving parts means less to break down, anyways.
  23. We use a sonicator (bath type, not probe type) to dissolve stubborn compounds in the lab - might speed up the process. It also helps with the bubbles sometimes (other times it makes them worse - chemistry is cruel like that, I suppose).
  24. Actually, that's a typo - it's 32-bit output. I'm tried it on my Parasound (not sure how that's possible since it's a 20-bit DAC chip, but whatever). It played wonderful music... that sounded exactly the same as 16-bit since it was from a CD
