  1. I gave my mom my old iPad 1. She likes it because it's easy to use and she can't screw it up (she's not friendly with computers). That said, it doesn't have a camera so the magnifying feature you need is out. Seeing as my mom told me she finds the iPad a bit heavy at times, perhaps maybe an iPad mini would be better for your mother?
  2. I'm looking for some help with what I think is a building electrical issue. Just picked up a pair of SR-002s from Justin. I've noticed an annoying hum in the right channel whenever I listen at my desk, but not when I listen in the bedroom (i.e. it's not the headphones). The hum is loudest when the SR-002 is connected to my gamma2 -> Mac (doesn't matter if the Mac is plugged in or not), but it doesn't go away when I disconnect the SR-002 amp from the gamma2, or even when I disconnect the SR-002 headphone cable from the amp. As in, I can hear a fricking hum even when I'm wearing headphones plugged into nothing at all. I've never heard this hum with my other Stax but I guess the SR-002s are uber-sensitive to this problem. Two things make the hum go away: if I touch the metal surface of my dac/amp/computer, or if I unplug every electrical object near my desk. My building is from the 1950s and although I have a three-prong outlet it is not grounded. Would it be correct to assume that somehow the SR-002 cable is picking up a stray electrical field, to further assume that this field is emanating from my dac/amp/computer, and that by touching these objects I somehow 'correct' whatever electrical failure causes this field? I am no electrical engineer, so these are just guesses. More importantly, is there some magic doo-dad that I can buy to fix this issue? Merci, Sameer
  3. Even RAID 1 is not a backup, in the sense that if you (accidentally) modify/delete a file on your RAID array it's immediately modified/deleted across all drives.
  4. Expecting up to 8 inches here in Montreal. Global warming my ass...
  5. I bought the 70-200 2.8 VRII a couple of years ago. It is much more lens than I need, but I do not regret buying it. The AF is fast (I would imagine that the lower light let in by the f/4 model slows the AF, but I can only speculate since I've not used it). Combining the 70-200 VRII with a 1.4x TC provides images a bit less sharp than with my 300 f/4, but it is still quite good. However, I still use the 300 mm f/4 since, even with my monopod, the combo feels lighter, and therefore much better for our outdoor hikes. With the 70-200 I have to use the Cotton Carrier or my back gets screwed up. As for the 80-200, I almost bought one of the two-ring models, which I felt were the best value at the time I was buying. After trying it and comparing to the VRII, I found I wanted the VR and faster AF of the 70-200. KR has a little spreadsheet comparing all the models (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80-200mm-history.htm)
  6. Actually, it is electrostatic. Here's the abstract of the original journal article: "Graphene has extremely low mass density and high mechanical strength, key qualities for efficient wide-frequency-response electrostatic audio speaker design. Low mass ensures good high frequency response, while high strength allows for relatively large free-standing diaphragms necessary for effective low frequency response. Here we report on construction and testing of a miniaturized graphene-based electrostatic audio transducer. The speaker/earphone is straightforward in design and operation and has excellent frequency response across the entire audio frequency range (20HZ – 20kHz), with performance matching or surpassing commercially available audio earphones." Bias voltage appears to be a paltry 100V. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1303.2391v1.pdf
  7. The double down was good, but both the gf and I found our mains to be wanting, her veal liver was very salty, my hangar steak not as tender as I would expect. I find Joe Beef a bit hyped up. If you do plan to eat there, reserve early - I had to book 6 weeks in advance.
  8. Perfect for a low carber like myself. Speaking of which, I finally tried the foie gras double down sandwich from Joe Beef (a schmancy restaurant in Montreal). Bacon and cheese between two slices of deep fried foie. Couldn't taste the bacon - I don't think thats ever happened before.
  9. My experience with a logic board swap (2010 MBP) was positive - it took a couple of days (which is what they quoted me) and my MBP came back in the same cosmetic condition as when I dropped it off.
  10. A little off topic, but I had the regular Drobo. It worked fine about 98% of the time, but the 2% that it gave me grief (needlessly rebuilding an array) was annoying. I used it with my HTPC and found it slow to 'spin up' from idle (much slower than a regular HD, and about as slow as my WD Mybook dual RAID0 array).
  11. Thanks also for starting the thread and everyone for sharing! While I've found a short-term diet (more below) I am looking for longer term solutions and find all these experiences very helpful! I'm 6'2", and in December was about 270 lbs. My previous success with a low-carb diet in 2003 (went from 270 to 210) prompted me to try again. Managed to drop to 238 in the past few months, and still going towards my goal of ~215. I've found the diet part easy, but exercise has eluded me so far - just no motivation. Aside from the diet guidebook I use (Protein Power) the biggest help is the MyFitnessPal app I have on my iPhone. I'm OCD about tracking what I eat, and by doing so I've made sure I don't exceed my carb limit. Aimless: 8 lbs in two weeks is an excellent loss! Even better since you've found a plan you can live with - IMO that's the hardest part. Congratulations! Like you, I noticed after a week that most of my cravings are gone, and the only one left (chocolate) is easily satisfied by 90% dark chocolate which fits within the 'rules' of my diet. That and scotch! mrarroyo: I think a lot of people think badly of the low-carb diets because, unless one is meticulous about following it, it becomes very easy to make a mistake and gain weight. Also, the 'high-fat' images invoked can be less than appealing. I know that in the beginning I ate quite a bit of fatty stuff (BACON), since I was trying to quell those cravings at the beginning of the diet. Now, I eat what I think is 'normal', and certainly my portion sizes and caloric intakes are MUCH lower than before I started. However, you mention eggs. I still have eggs and bacon for breakfast, not because I care to but because I've yet to find a suitably filling replacement. What do you have? Hop: I'm glad to hear your IBS has settled! My g/f has minor IBS and be sure to share those diet details with her. You mention sugar - I'm convinced that processed sugar, in the amounts that most of us consume it in, is nothing but trouble for our bodies.
  12. I've used Carbon Copy Cloner for a few years also with no issues. Never had to use a backup, but I've tested them and they are bootable. Don't know about using the same HD as with the TM backups but I don't see why not.
  13. No - that was an epic typo. I meant to say that we get the FOX/NBC/CBS and whatever sports they happen to have on, but NOT the cable sports networks like ESPN (or TSN for us Canucks). Yeah I don't know what's going to come of those new laws, but there are caps on the amounts the courts can award (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/michael-geist/file-sharing-lawsuit-canada_b_2204518.html), so that we don't end up with a nation of Jammie Thomas's.
  14. Over-the-air HDTV is great for this, but you'll only get whatever's on the major networks, so no ESPN, etc. Edited: - forgot to type NO in front of ESPN...
  15. We cut the cord last year when we moved to Montreal. I bought a HDTV antenna (channel master) and put it in the skylight. We get 17 channels, including the PBS, CBS, FOX, and NBC affiliates from Vermont. The quality is full HD is looks great (except FOX, which broadcasts in HD, but all the shows are in SD quality for some stupid reason). tvfool.com can tell you what channels you are likely to get. Often the latest TV shows are also streaming from the major TV networks in Canada, so we get decent quality (not quite HD, but better than SD), with about half the commercials. Usenet used to provide a lot of TV shows but it's now being DMCAd on a daily basis so it's harder to get stuff.
  16. At the other place (http://www.head-fi.org/t/651044/stax-lambda-pros), immtbiker is selling Lambda Pros for $700. I thought most of the older lambdas were more like 400 or so. Could someone please illuminate me? I feel like I'm missing something.
  17. I think we got about 30-40% of it. The handwritten parts were particularly tough to decipher the letters for us, too.
  18. Send it over. We live in Quebec.
  19. I would recommend that you not re-format the 'old' hard drive for a few months, in case you miss a folder during migration or something.
  20. Might I ask why you want to do a clean install? I would normally suggest that, if the contents of your current drive are less than 256 GB, to clone that over to the new SSD and be done with it. Unlike Windows, where I found a clean install every year helped speed things up for me, I've never really felt the need with my various Macs (the last time I did a clean install was 2006!, and the two times I upgraded computers I just cloned or moved the HD). Carbon Copy Cloner is great for this, and I've used it numerous times. Just plug the SSD into an external enclosure, run Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the internal HD to the SSD, then install the SSD and you are done. I've never used Migration Utility. Otherwise you'll find a lot of these settings in ~/Library The library folder is normally hidden but if you choose the Go to Folder option from the Go menu in the finder you can manually enter ~/Library Two side notes that come to mind (I'm not actually sure about the following so perhaps someone can set me straight): - can you manually merge an SSD and an HDD as a fusion drive? I thought that was only for the actual Fusion Drives sold by Apple. - an SD card as a boot drive would be slow, no? SD's are not as fast as SSDs, IIRC. However I've never actually done that myself so I'm just speculating.
  21. ^^ I'll confess that I didn't read those articles but I'll share my one piece of advice - consider getting what your shooting buddies have, so you can share lenses, etc. I bought into Nikon, and I love it, but all my buddies ended up with Canons, so I was never able to share stuff.
  22. FWIW I have always used non-Apple memory in my mac stuff. Monkey - did you try putting the two sticks that work into the two slots that appear not to work? (are all four sticks are the same size?) Also some macs have an upper limit on how much RAM they can address, IIRC.
