  1. Wouldn't that make them slower and less fit than most, what with all the heart tissue-scarring from the CHD and the alcohol consumption making their livers larger than their sporran?
  2. <rant> Could they stop with the freaking downtime every day or so? It always seems to happen when I'm right in the middle of writing a long PM or post, or when some Google search that I really want to see links there. I mean seriously, with all the advertising and donations, they should have nice servers, right? </rant>
  3. I was using the MobileMe free trial happily, but my university switched to Exchange around the time my trial expired, so I didn't renew and now I have free push I'd say that if one has Exchange, only one computer and no need for the webspace, MobileMe is probably not worth the $100 Apple charges. Pity they don't have a "sync only" version of Mobile Me - say no webspace, e-mail forwarding only, and $25 a year...
  4. Actually, John, who's a fellow Canuck, is selling his HD600s atm. I bought myself a used pair recently and listen to plenty of techno/electronica with them with very pleasing results. No fatigue, except occasionally the clamping force of the Senns on my exceptionally large brain.
  5. Does she not want the MB because of cost? An older iBook would fit the bill perfectly and be cheaper. Also, it crossed my mind to recommend you get her a Macbook and just tell her it's the "new Vista"... More seriously, I just researched this myself as my Dad needed a new PC for his business, and he wanted to stick with XP for compatibility reasons. There were only two options available to us - get a Netbook with XP already installed (cheap, does the job very well, but tiny screen a problem), or get a Macbook and bootcamp with XP (what we ended up doing). All the other laptops ran Vista only and there was no gurantee of XP driver support with the brands available at Future Shop (big Canadian compy retailer). We went with the Macbook, but perhaps a netbook or eee PC + monitor/kb/mouse is a cheap, viable option? Agreed - my cousin's family using Vista for everything and they get along fine.
  6. Apple support asked me to run an fsck when I had my problem, and they knew I was running Leopard at the time, so fsck away!
  7. One of the disadvantages of not being an undergrad any more - my tolerance sure ain't what it used to be. At least I didn't puke. That's one thing about undergrad drinking I WON'T miss.
  8. What part of Manitoba? "too remote a location" means pretty much anywhere outside of the 'peg
  9. It's the same colour as the Klingon blood in Star Trek VI!
  10. Great advice, I'd forgetten about fsck. Actually, when that failed for me (I had a serious HD issue), I used Diskwarrior which saved my HD and data after Disk Utility, my Applecare CD, and fsck failed.
  11. Woke up at a friend's after finishing the better part of 2 bottles of wine and a drink called an "Irish car bomb"? at a party last night. Spent most of the day in frigid downtown Toronto with a splitting headache.
  12. Hot damn! That's huge! BTW, is that a drobo on the left?
  13. Assuming a reboot didn't fix it, try Disk Utility --> Repair Disk Permissions. Also, fire up Activity Monitor - if anything is chugging lots of CPU, that might be the problem (post the name of the app here if it is).
  14. You heard background noise with Senns and the Pico? That's gotta've been in the source/track! I just cranked mine up to 3 o'clock on high gain with my HD600s - nothing. Perhaps even more convincing is that when I use my IEMs on low gain and turn it up, I cannot hear any hiss... only one other dac/amp I've heard is capable of that.
  15. So, I'm listening to my HD600s through the Pico as I type, A/Bing between it and my Headfive (via TC-7510). I am confident in the Headfive's ability to fully drive my HD600s, and as such I feel I would notice a difference between it and my Pico if the Pico were too weak. My "initial" feeling, (note that as I listen more and more I might develop a finer grasp on the details), is that the Pico on high gain is able to deliver music that sounds as full as my Headfive. The Pico's bass might be a touch tighter, better controlled that is, but still there and loud. At high gain, normal listening volume for me would be about 10-11 o'clock on the Pico dial (and similarly on the Headfive dial, in case you're wondering). For those of you who might feel that the Pico is better than the Headfive, or that the Headfive is not doing the HD600s justice, I don't have anything better to compare, and so the only statement I'm willing to make ATM is the Pico is able to drive the HD600s as fully as the Headfive. I also don't have a fancy SPL meter so this is based on my feelings. If anyone wants me to try anything specific, I'm all ears (groan).
  16. I once tried a 26" TV on my Jerker desk - the brightness was brutal. 24" LCD worked just fine though... although I don't know what I'd do with a 37"! Put up a pic when you're done.
  17. I like the shadow cast by the handrail on the snow. Actually, the whole house part looks nice - crop out the forest and make a vertical photo? (Yes, I love cropping).
  18. Got a nosebleed. Washing my face, and I test metal... Figure there's rust in the pipes. Look down at sink, see red. Look up into mirror, see LOTS of red.
  19. DETAILS PLEASE!!! I want to do that in our lab! Most I've ever done is make guncotton...
  20. Actually those are pretty critical for storing chemicals - every so often I worry that the fridge we use in our lab is NOT explosion proof and will one day... what the fu-BOOM!
  21. Hope you get it on Friday - I hate waiting for post-office weekends...
  22. I know I'll get flak for this, but I'm Canadian and I love the tones in Tom Sawyer.
  23. Met a professor and started a research collaboration. Got my Pico
