  1. I was on my way to the post office today when I noticed some guy having a garage sale. Bought 150 LP's in good condition (his very own personal collection) for $100. Lot of old school Spanish music that reminds me of my childhood times with my cousins (Julio Iglesias, for example), some Rolling Stones, Carpenters, lots of different stuff. I will compile a list of everything later. I asked the old man why he was selling them. Well, he had just sold the house and was moving upstate with his wife. They were going to drive there, so everything had to go. Everything is in pristine condition: original sleeves and all. Now I have forced myself to fix that busted Thorens I got. I asked him what happened to his turntable. He replied that was the first thing that sold. I think he mentioned it was a Thorens... I forget exactly because I was too busy flipping thru the records. He refused to sell his records to people he thought were "flippers," out to sell his collection for money. When I started talking to him about music, his eyes lit up, and he was happy that they were going to someone who would appreciate his collection. Nice old man. Looks like he had head-caser potential. But I didn't bring it up. The last thing a man his age needs is to be using retirement money on audio gear.
  2. Sadly, anticipation has never lived up to my expectations. In anything. I just like surprises. Well, good ones, of course. I think the HD800 is walking dangerously close to the line of over-hype, if it hasn't crossed it already. As such, I will no longer read anything that has to do with these cans until they are finally released. I will know when that is because the plethora of threads will be difficult to ignore. Also, I am used to these postponements: happens in the video game industry ALL THE TIME.
  3. I swear this thread is gonna be the end of me... I have gone from curiosity to slight consideration to full-blown "what should I start with"... ...and I have no money. I need to ask for a raise...
  4. A toast (albeit with a diet coke, since I have no licquor available).
  5. Audio Cubes has the non-American version. That's why. Actually, I don't even know if that version will continue to be in production either... Hmmm...
  6. the 1st one was specifically with the 007ta. the description mentioned, written, 007a tube amplifier. Winner got it for $2700. I'm trying to get my idea of how much I would expect to pay for something like this (have read the 007ta is better than the 007t). The 2nd round seems to be the 007t. He does state "Returns only if product does not fit description." So the first one HAD to be 007ta. The 2nd auction brings a stand though. Whoop de doo.
  7. I just saw this auction end. Is this the going price for this combo? Just measuring prices for future investments (listed as buy it now of $3500, best offer of $2700 won): STAX SR-007 Headphones+ SRM-007ta Tube Amplifier - eBay (item 220402926289 end time May-05-09 19:56:51 PDT)
  8. I decided not to go through with my order after all. I was going to order from work but then I remembered all the crazy security the bank has, so I had decided to postpone it till I got home. Well, once I got home, I started thinking about what I could actually use this for, and came up empty. So I decided to pass the offer. Instead, I figured I might buy some more music, which is always good.
  9. Is this what our economy is coming down to? Slashing prices to ridiculous levels to make a sale? Tempting us to buy things we have no present need for? Pfffffffffft! (clicks and buys two) (singing) I like to be in America Okay by me in America Everything free in America For a small fee in America
  10. May this day Quetzalcoatl spread its wings and fly high above ye, showering you with blessed droppings to shield you from the plagues of the wicked swine!
  11. But they don't spin though! I need my bling to spin! Spinnin' tube rims, yo! ... Ok. But seriously, that is very clever. I like how many details can be had for much less than if an "audiophile" merchant made them (who knows what they'd price these at). EDIT: what will you do with the lenses? Make portholes to view the innards of the amps or something?
  12. The quote in your sig goes so well with that pic.
  13. Yeah, I was inaccurate the 1st time. Kinda sped-read the post. Anyhow, first time I see a company downplaying their product's potential.
  14. Page 9 on the manual uses the phrase "at least" in reference to the specs for the inputs. (sorry, I've just been reading up on this unti since I will be getting it from AB soon).
  15. I found the Bel Canto Dac3 manual online, and it mentions 24/192. Here is the download page: Bel Canto Look at page 4, right-hand side column, 4th bullet point down from the top. It doesn't say it is limited to certain inputs.
  16. Any of the owners out there tried the Balanced inputs to test for sound quality degradation when converting to SE over RCA all the way through? Nothing in my rig is balanced, so I have no way to test this.
  17. holy @#$#@$%^ I never expected them to fit like that.
  18. Ahh, that explains a lot. I've never seen pics of someone wearing a Stax, so I wrongfully assumed they sat like the AKG's you mentioned. Thanks for clearing that up.
  19. Any word on 7's audio driver or whatever it is (is it like Vista's, etc.)?
  20. Excuse me guys, as the world of electrostats is foreign to me. If you recall, not too long ago there was a Stax SRS005 system for sale here. As you all know, the 'phones go in your ear, and proper fit is a must for best audio quality. This is such a noob question, but here goes: I don't understand how this system would introduce me to the world of stats if these are sorta like IEM's (an assumption I am making), when all I have seen about Stax is that they work more like speakers floating at the sides of your head than headphones.
  21. This is pretty important to me. It is actually one of the first tests I do will all equipment: no music, max out volume, listen for noise. Thanks for the input on that.
  22. How come non-audiophiles frown upon woodies so much... Actually, come to think of it, when I started this hobby about three years ago, I thought woodies were goofy-looking. Then, one day, I woke up thinking they were damn sexy. There was no in-between, gradual ease into liking them. Boom! Just like that, I liked them. I can only attribute that to something subliminal whispered into my ear that entire night... but who?
  23. The only DAC I've heard is the Monarchy M24, which I got for aprox $700 two years ago from a head-fier. I bought it because I had available funds at the time. This is supposedly better than the M33, form what I have read, not heard myself. Sadly, I have nothing to compare this M24 too, since it is the only DAC I've ever heard. Sometimes I think I am not appreciating this unit as I should because I have not heard others.
  24. This might be of interest to some here: Audio Origami - ReWires I will try this project sometime in the next two months or so, after I have played enough with the Thorens I just got to start my 1st vinyl rig. Just wanted to throw this out there for those of you who are itching to try something new. I have also read up on the DIY Altmann TT, but I'm guessing that's been discussed here before: The Altmann DIY Turntable And then there is the HDD mixing turntable: HDDJ: Turning an old hard disk drive into a rotary input device Well, plenty of projects to choose from!
