Thanks for the tips Pete, I've actually tried both shielded and unshielded cables so I don't think thats it. Also I've tried the Denon directly to the D-Sonic and the hum is still there so that rules out the modwright being part of the problem. I've found a few posts over at avs complaining about the same thing with the 4308ci so I'm beginning to think it's a problem stricly with the pre-outs. Might end up having to send it in for repair and hope for the best. This weekend I'm planning to run the speakers directly to the speaker outs on the denon that way I can see if it's just the pre-outs or a more serious issue.

One of the downsides of the ice power based amps is that they have a pretty low input impedance. So for tube pre-amps using 6sn7 or 12ax7 families of tubes can struggle to drive them properly. Your fine with the modwright though it has no problems driving loads that low.

Mike, what pre-amp are you using?

Could you take some close-up internal shots of one of the amp boards?

deepak, are you sure it's not just their retarded "speed boost" feature that essentially gives you a higher rate for like the first 50megs or so of a download/upload?

If I leave the reciever off and switch the pre-amp into ht bypass there is no hum. Disconnecting the reciever from the pre also results in no hum. I've tried having them both plugged into the same strip and different strip resulting in no change. I acually have sockets on two seperate circuits right by the speaker rig I've tried them both on the same circuit and on seperate ones doesn't help.

Ok let me explain how my speaker rig is currently setup. I have the APL 3910 and the Modwright 9100ES going into the two of the inputs on the Modwright SWL 9.0SE. The modwright pre's outputs are connected to the D-Sonic power amp. Now on to where the problem(s) come into play. I also have my denon 4308ci recievers front channel pre-outs connected to the HT Bypass input on the Modwright pre. The ht bypass input essentially ignores the volume control on the modwright allowing the volume to be controlled by only the reciever. When I have the reciever on (and the ht bypass input on the modwright pre selected) I have a pretty nasty ground loop hum. The hum is not there if the reciever is off or I'm using one of the other sources hooked up to the modwright pre. So it has to be related to the reciever in someway. Initially I thought it was caused by my cable tv not being grounded correctly but I have addressed that issue and can rule it out as being the cause. The denon reciever doesn't use a grounded plug so theres no oppourtunity to try a cheater plug. At this point I'm running out of ideas. I'm tempted to try sticking one of these in-line between the pre-outs in the reciever and the ht bypass input on the pre-amp.

Makes sense actually since the Denon's are converting sacd's dsd to pcm and dvd-a is native pcm...

DVD-A is quite dead it's not something I'd call all that important and yeah the PS3 (some versions at least) can do SACD and Blu-ray for a whole lot less than 6k .

I really like the 750W corsair supply I bought a few months back and it has 4x8-pin pci-e connectors. I've also had good luck with the thermaltake toughpower series supplies.

It's not just the tanking economy that'll help drop prices, the recent judgement/settlement in the LCD price fixing scandal should help drop prices even further.

Any service calls you'd process through the manufacturer anyways unless it's something that goes wrong in the 30-day money back guarantee of the retailer. I agree with Dan, the LCD will weigh less, and will also use substantially less power. Plasma's are power whores and use quite a bit of power. Almost forgot, I'd wait till we get closer to the holidays, LCD prices are going to start falling like crazy.

You could try a different hard drive to see if that's it, but I'd still expect it to boot even with a bad HD since the base OS is kept in on-board rom. You'll probably end up having to ship it back to Sony, their turnaround time is pretty quick from what I hear, but you won't necessarily get your PS3 back and they don't have any of the originals left so most likely you'll get stuck with a newer one that doesn't have the hardware emulation chip.

Not sure if it's the case here or not, but these days a lot of the modems ISP's give to customers are really modem/wireless routers all in one. They don't cost the ISP's more money and wireless is common/popular enough for them to want to include it.

Does the cable modem/router have wireless? If so you might as well disable it since you aren't using it. Also if possible it might be worth setting either the cable modem or the apple router to work in bridge mode. That way only one of them will be trying to assign IP's to your devices. Like Nate said try out another wireless device, it could just be an issue with the mac mini.

IMO the first episode is actually the worst one, they tried to rush everything together too quickly and it didn't work well at all. So far it seems to be getting consistently better with each new episode.

It's been a pretty enjoyable series so far, be interesting to see where the storyline goes.
