Sony NW-ZX1: 35th Walkman Aniv. model with 128 GB on Board & 24/192 capable
It's been a busy week at work to say the least! Got the sony on Wednesday but didn't really get a chance to really listen until last night. My initial thoughts are this DAP is absolutely top notch. Sound is very very good , cleaner and slightly analytical it leans more to the sound of ayre/plinus while the 901 is more meridian/wadia like. The interface is every bit as good as the a k100 which is about all we seem to be able to expect out of these devices. I plan to do an iPhone, a k100, 901 and NW-ZX1 compare later (ala headfi wanker style). The iPhone still bests all these devices in pure usability but the sony and the ak do not frustrate too badly. The 901 I love despite the form factor and interface. In the end I think sony has charted a course that has them at least as good an interface and form factor than the rest of these products and a sound quality that is in the same league (albeit a different flavor) as the HiFIman 801/901. Oh and it is handling Dark Side of the Moon very well not creating gaps between songs! The hugo and Calyx products should be interesting. The Hugo is more a transportable product needing a transport (from what I have read) but the Calyx could be interesting.

AKG K812
I love Patrick's quote" To get the best sound, you should spend at least 95% of your entire system on our cables, 4% on our tweaks, and 1% on electronics". Pure delusion

JH Audio stuffs
I have never heard someone walk away from the JH booth at any event ever and say this... Not doubting this is what you perceived just the first time in 4 years I've heard any JH product called weak or thin. Maybe slightly bass heavy or bass-midbass boosted...

Astell&Kern stuff
For me. 901 easily an equal to or greater than desktop set up in the CIEM REALM. The AK100 not so much but still very good

Astell&Kern stuff
I really look forward to checking this unit out and hope it is close to equal the 901. The 128 on board memory is great (well not so much as I now have a small army of sd and micro sd cards). I think some people view these devices as jogging, airplane, train or ust walking around devices. I don't that is the realm of the iPhone to me. I use a portable dap more like a transportable system for travel, sitting outside, on my balcony or at the pub listening when no one joins me for a pint. The environment in a plane with it's low rumble to me negates many of the benefits of a high end dap. I am interested in the Caylx (sp) but will wait to hear that one and figure that out of the gate they'll suffer UI problems not unlike ibasso, hifiman, fill and to a lesser extent AK.

2014 Cycling/Running/Fitness Goals
For me complete one tough mudder, complete one sprint tri, maybe a 10k or two and do in excess of 3500 miles on the bike. I'm not looking at centuries right now as 2-3 hours on that medieval turtler device called a bike seat is enough for me Oh and I would like to get myself down to sub 190 mainly to see what that does for me on the bike and running

Astell&Kern stuff
yes that's the one, all I can say is the 801 and 901 have not been bested on the portable sound front.

Astell&Kern stuff
The 901 is truly the best of the bunch from a sound perspective. The Ak100 needs an amp to be used with my JH13s for the bass to come to reasonable quality. The 901 can be quirky as some songs seem to start at the 1-2 second second mark and at times it doesn't like micro sd with adapters but all and all a device that rivals home set ups. I would live with all the quirks of the 901 prior to spending on the 120 or 240 as I doubt they'd sound nearly as good and are both more $$. I've got the Sony on order and am interested to see if it can get close to the 901 without the UI, song start issues or card reading quirks.

Desktop
I totally love my Genelec 8050's and for the most part think studio monitors are a great way to go. They can be tougher to audition but when you get the chance they re worth a listen. The main issue I have with mine is they perform stunningly well in the near to mid field but are very good bit not as good set up in traditional speaker distances of 8-10 ft.
