Well, they're hybrid discs, so even without a SACD player, you could still enjoy them. It's hard to imagine the redbook layer won't be awesome.

The magical thinking that goes on at that site makes me wince. Just the reviewers' "Sundry accessories" list is full of stinkers: Personally, I don't know how their system is even listenable without a Tice Clock.

Any thoughts/experiences with RVG Blue Note remasters?

Luis, I've noticed that OJC has been issuing a new series of "Orin Keepnews" edition remasters of OJC titles. Do you have an opinion on how those sound compared to the earlier CD releases? -
How about the Black Flag collection, The First Four Years? Of course, you'll grind to a halt when you hit "Damaged."

Lenovo AC adapter recommendations?

In Thinkpad-speak, CRU is customer-replaceable unit. So, it sounds like they are sending you a replacement adapter. -
Well, it just goes to show that people's opinions vary widely: I had the MS-2 and despite trying bowls, reversed bowls, comfies and HD-414 pads (+/- quarter mod), I could never find a setup that tamed what I felt was ear-shredding treble without killing the dynamic punchiness of the headphones. And the midrange, where is the midrange??? In the end, I found I preferred the MS-1 with quarter-modded HD-414 pads. The MS-2 had better bass, though.

Call them up and ask to talk to Nate, he's the guy who handles the subscriptions. He was very helpful when I set up mine. Sort of like the old school vinyl format, I like that AS has old school customer service where you can just call them up.

Anyone know if there is any hope for 33rpm versions? I got in on the SACD preorder because I can't imagine dealing with only a song or two per side. I'd rather track down a used copy of the original pressing for my $50.

FINALLY (56k [does anyone even have that anymore?])

Did the clamp come with the 'table? -
Thanks for the link (I fixed the spelling of the seller's name for anyone else who wants to take a look there). He's got a lot of cool stuff! The caps are for the Denon DA-500 mods (filter section). The six caps in there now are 2700pF. It looks like the ones on eBay are too big. I do see another seller, QRO_Team, who has some Russian box polystyrenes for sale. Anyone deal with him or use those caps?
-
Thanks for the info on the polystyrene caps. It looks like PS are nearly unobtanium in the United States except for boutique varieties.

Thanks so much for the link! The Mats were one of my first concerts, out late on a school nite at an all ages show. Ahh... the memories.

And Christ, these were in the _power supply_. Not to say they couldn't have an effect, but I'd really be shocked if he would have such consistent results if he were blinded. Since there are polystyrene fans here, anyone have any opinion on the el-cheapo ($1 or less) polystyrene caps available from Parts Connexion?
-
Yes, there appears to be only one power supply. There is one transformer which goes to a bridge rectifier and then to + and - 5V and 12V linear regulator ICs. Since the 12V supplies are only used in the analog section as far as I can tell, there is some separation of the two. However, I recall reading that linear regulators are not so good at rejecting noise, so one side could still "pollute" the other.

You need a better set of screwdrivers, deepak Here's the analog section of the DA-500. Some highlights are: M5218 op amps (IC502 and IC504) are filters PC4570 op amps (IC501 and IC503) serve as I/V and buffer C514 and C515 are the output capacitors

Hi, Filburt! Which do you think would be preferable?: Using a 4032, or converting a dual I/V to 4031s using a single-to-dual adapter? I know there are a lot of folks who don't care for Browndog adapters, but they have a pretty nifty dual DIP -> two single SOIC adapter that I've had good luck with before. Also, is there any problem with increasing output coupling cap size from, say, 22uF to 47uF? This would be on a DA-500. Stock is 16V 22uF, and I have some 16V 47uF Silmics I could use there. BTW, if anyone has technical questions about the DA-500, I have a service manual I can check.

There seem to be a lot of jazz fans here, and a number of SF Bay Area folks as well. If you get a chance to make it out to Oaktown, the Oakland Museum of California has an exhibit, "Birth of the Cool," highlighting jazz, design and art from midcentury California. For a jazz newbie like me, it was very educational. Even if you are an expert, there are a lot of audio/video works to enjoy, and a nice collection of photographs of many jazz greats taken by William Claxton. Here's a link: Birth of the Cool California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury

So I guess those guys at AA had a different definition of "Designed and Assembled in USA" than I have... What did this cost when it was new? And that extra cost was for, uh, some sheets of damping material

On the recommendation of this forum, I picked up a couple of Quad 11L monitors. I just measured them, and they were 7.5" wide. Can you spare the little extra space? They sound fantastic, and are a nice improvement on some Paradigm Atoms. I'll probably add a subwoofer, but I don't feel like bass is wanting. The clean, clean highs are the best feature, in my opinion. Speaking of the Atoms, if you really can't go over 7", they are 6.5" (in version 3, they are up to v4 or v5 now) and inexpensive for good sound quality. Definitely not as good as the Quads, but I was happy with them.
-
I might just pilfer the sub from the other system, then. Where will I find all of the AC outlets??? (2 speakers, the sub, the amp, the CD player...) O the struggles of the audio geek.
-
I got the pair on Head-Fi for exactly 400 bucks.

Well, thanks to a GREAT deal (I hope) on that other headphone site, I have some powered Quad 11L speakers on the way. I guess I'll be doing the preamp thing after all. Fortunately, the Proton has a pre-out. I appreciate your input!
-
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Since I'll have to switch multiple sources (at least the tuner and CD player, maybe a computer DAC source one day), I'll need at least a preamp (might as well get an integrated). So, active speakers would be somewhat superfluous. Plus, wouldn't I get a better speaker for the money if I'm not paying for amplification that I don't need? I see that Quad makes a passive 11L2. Does anyone know if it sounds similar to the active version? There's an online dealer who has open-box KEFs for only $350 so that may be enough incentive for me to take the plunge
