  1. Happy birthday, Gene! I'll put away a cold one in your honor tonight!
  2. Happy birthday, Zoe! Be careful not to spend your college savings on audio gear.
  3. I'm reasonably sure a Roomba would not survive the afternoon with my cat. Last night, she tried to pull the buttons off my shirt. While I was still wearing it.
  4. I'll wager that some small critter died in your HVAC system or near the air intake. One time, I had to swerve on a country road to avoid an accident. That took my car right over a dead raccoon in the road which not only took out my speedometer cable, but splattered all over the exhaust. I ran it a few times through a carwash that sprayed the undercarraige. Helped a little, but the smell of death lingered for a few weeks. Speaking of tomfoolery, back in undergrad, we picked up a fish at the market and put it between the mattress and boxspring of one of my fraternity brothers. It was hellish and he went nuts, but he never found the fish until the end of the year when he moved his bed out.
  5. Happy belated birthday, Dinny!
  6. I'm also in the market for a LED-LCD TV. I'm willing to spend up to $2,000. There's no urgency, but does anyone think it'd be worth holding off until after Christmas? There are supposedly good sales kicking off on Black Friday, but there are usually better deals after Boxing Day. I could bite after Thanksgiving, but would it be worth waiting to knock a few hundred off a 55"?
  7. Pink Martini puts on a good show. I saw them at the Tiffany in Portland on New Year's Eve in 2002. Great fun and I've been a fan since. More recently, I saw Mini-KISS at the Paradise Casino in Yuma on October 30. They didn't quite have it together for a few songs, but they rocked on quite a few. They were also really cool with the audience. They allowed people right up front for photos and had lots of interaction. They came out after the show to sign autographs and take photos. Cool guys - I'd see them again.
  8. Deoxit works pretty well - I've cleaned up a lot of scratchy old pots and other stuff with it. Recapping the crossovers won't be too bad once you get them out of the cabinets. Be thankful there's no power supply.
  9. I'm back in LA for a few days. I spent part of the morning packing more stuff, including a lot of the DIY parts. Now I'm taking a break at the bar. I'll load up and head back to the desert late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
  10. I went to see Willie Nelson at the Greek on Friday night. He was a little rusty in the first couple of songs, but straightened up and played for nearly two hours. Incredible chops, considering the guy is pushing 80. He sounded great and showed a bit of humor. At the end, he spent about 15 minutes shaking hands and signing things with people at the front. Class act and I'm planning to see him again.
  11. I've picked up solder older than I am at the W6TRW meet. Never had any trouble with it.
  12. I spent a couple hours inside an abandoned house down here that I'm thinking about buying. It's ca. 1870-1880. I took a bunch of photos and took a closer look at the construction and what it would probably need for a restoration. It needs, well, pretty much everything. The roof has to be rebuilt, at the very least. The north wall is slightly bowed and I think the foundation in the northwest corner is a little hinky. The roof can be dealt with but the foundation freaks me out. But it's got a great brick exterior, the original trimwork is still up inside and it has a view of the valley and mountains. Not to mention a front room that's roughly 24' x 20' with 12' ceilings - dipole heaven. I'll pester the realtor to find out who owns it and lean on a local building engineer for the straight story on the foundation. If it's not hideously expensive to restore, I'll pick it up. Currently, I'm on the third bar of the night and have two or three more on the schedule.
  13. Something being offered for free at the bar. I don't know what it is, it seems like orange chicken with red peppers and japape
  14. Sherwood, if you haven't tried anything from Bear Republic yet, drop by. More of their beer has been showing up down south and I've been very happy with their Racer 5. Another brewery I'm happy to see on the list is Bend Brewing. I used to go there regularly when I lived in the area. Haven't been for a few years, but they always had great beer, food and a friendly staff. Likewise Deschutes, but they're better known. Also spent a lot of time at BridgePort in Portland as well as Rogue when I hit the coast. I've also had a few good brews from Lagunitas - they're worth sampling.
  15. Spent the morning packing a few more things; I think I'll shove off for Arizona tomorrow morning. Currently at the Desert Room working on a few pints of Sierra Nevada and watching the Packers game while enjoying a Macanudo. Yes, they let you smoke inside here; I can't express how much I'll miss this place. Suppose I should find something to eat before working on another round of pints.
  16. If it isn't too late, please count me in for boards and the kit, too. Thanks, Kevin.
  17. Thought I'd put a few up of the kids. These were taken on Mother's Day in Descanso Gardens:
