Stax SRD 6/7 - opinions?
The question I have is would there be less distortion in using a low ratio transformer and lots of gain / power behind it, or vise versa? I have a feeling, but nothing to back it up (yet). I think that's plenty to complain about though

Soon enough I'll be able to measure the distortion, working on getting the data into a computer at the moment. I think it will be a lot more than people think. I'd guess around .05%-.1% at full power at 1kHz.

The Headcase Stax thread
That would likely look worse, as you'd still have the black cable...

Al is my hero. Please compare the three on the left. I'll pick up one of the 3 at some point (assuming I can find it).

Indeed it's a 2.5" drive. I have 3 of them. Alas, people ignore me in this thread I'm not enough of an enabler. I did play with an AppleTV today, and I want one.

I'm in the nuts camp still. The benefit would have the access time to Amarra, not to the music files themselves. In that case, I think the Momentus XT would be an equal choice:

New DAC in Town
Could be a typo.. I'd guess they mean 12 Vpp and not RMS.

I'd consider a Seagate Momentus XT. I love mine.

Smeggy, what about LCD-1 enclosures? I've been wanting to PM you about that, but don't have the cash now to make it a reality. I think that would be fantastic way to go.

Rubicon
- Harbeth P3ESR or Amphion Ion L
holy panasonic batman! I dunno, I'd guess veneered baltic birth for the front? who knows... There are five finish options available. this is on Harbeth's website: "It is true that real woods are used for the veneers, but looked at in the long-term, the logs that yielded those veneers have been put to the best possible use on Harbeth cabinets."- The analog thread.
I have a bit of experience in this area, as I have a local friend with two different Garrard 301 setups. I've compared two different Lenco builds, both of which came in at about half the 301 costs. I guess I prefer the Lenco sound, and it seems to be about a 60/40 split with others in the area that have heard both, in slight preference to the Lenco. It's hard to really characterize the differences though, where when I compare to direct drive setups for example it's an obvious across the board improvement. There are other areas to improve, that don't really see mainstream mention on the Lenco. I use a very sophisticated AC regeneration system that uses 3 phase power. I found this to be a very big improvement, as I don't have to worry about the quirks of varying the pulley diameter to do speed changes or even having to worry about European versus NA pulley diameters (perhaps pulley isn't the right word, it's the hourglass shaped metal piece that drives the idler). In the end, getting something sooner than later might be a valid concern. However, I really like the Lenco approach in replacing the top plate and isolating the motor. This is why I feel that the design really surpasses the Garrard "replinth". The mods really transform the Lenco, where the transformation is perhaps less so with the Garrard.- Harbeth P3ESR or Amphion Ion L
Either that or they've done an acceptable job in marketing this as a differentiator to those that don't know better. - Harbeth P3ESR or Amphion Ion L
