Ayre K-XR Pre and M-XR Monoblocks -- Who's heard them?
luvdunhill replied to Voltron's topic in Speakers
yup, I love this feature, my BAT preamp was the same way. In fact, you could use the solid-state phono stage card through the tape loop without firing the tubes up, which was *really* nice -

my brain has been missing the last few weeks. I thought you were implying that you could run headphones right off the tape loop... I didn't see the "amplifier" part -

do it (then send me high rez photos) oh and I call dibs if you need to move them quick and cheap (really cheap) for some sort of tax reasons, or mafia "reasons", or divorce settlement, or whatever.. -
high current shunt reg you say?

Ayre K-XR Pre and M-XR Monoblocks -- Who's heard them?
luvdunhill replied to Voltron's topic in Speakers
I suppose for some a heart-pitter-patter is special anyways, the question would be whether or not the main preamplifier circuity is responsible for handling the headphone load, or if it's an ancillary function. The latter would be my guess. Reason being that the tape loop may be powering something like a tube amp that in normal situations would cause an impedance mismatch. -

It's probably just a buffered tape loop. Hell, I can do this off my KGSS and have done so. -
local sheetmetal shop is what I'd recommend if going steel. I wouldn't want to mess with it. Otherwise, cover it in mu-metal shielding and ERS paper

actually, this is interesting... so, I had ordered pj's parts at Newark and then got annoyed as there was something stupid out of stock and it was going to take 3-4 weeks to get in... well, I forgot to cancel the order... and just got notification yesterday that it shipped. So, if anyone would like a pair of opamps and a SOIC adapter, let me know and I can send them out for a modest fee.

Here's the website with the regulators: NewClassD Products They also sell them at PartsConnexion. I think P-A offers some similar chips on his website that might be cheaper.

sounds like a good option. Maybe do a simple CRC filter as well. I just cannot see a sigma22 to be practical at all, given the cost and the fact that you're not planning on replacing the regulators. If you want to spend this kind of cash, you could replace the regulators with DEXA discrete regulators or something like that and use the unregulated supply you're proposing...

sure. I need you to do 2 measurements for me. First, put your meter in DC volts mode. If you get one of those cheap Centex red ones from Harbor Freight, like this: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices then place the knob in the position that points to "20 DCV" and the black probe in the "Common" location and the red probe in the VOmA location in the lower right hand corner. Then place the probes across the motor terminals inside the case. Just follow the wires going from the socket to the PC board and measure at the terminal block. I believe it's marked X3. It doesn't really matter which probe goes where, as we just need an absolute reading. Be careful not to slip and short things out, in other words, don't let the probes touch each other when you're measuring. This measurement needs to be done with the table running for a minute or two so the speed is able to stabilize. Repeat the same measurement for the 45rpm setting. Just to give you an idea, mine measured around 7.5V for 45rpm and 6.0V for 33rpm.

yes, of course... it shouldn't be too hard at all. Also, the banding for the toroids came in today as well. Once I get the mu metal and the new resistors from Canada, I'll send you a package.

heh... I suppose I was too busy vented about their "release dates" in that thread to remember anything

Steve: One thing to realize is that you will have to alter the loading once you put the step-up in line. The Consonance seems to have 20dB and 17dB taps, which refer to the amount of gain you can get. Assuming you want to stick to around 100 ohms loading and want to use the 20dB (i.e. the higher gain) taps, then by my calculations you will need a pair of 12.7k resistors. I'll order them this week for you. If you want 150 ohm loading, then you'll need a pair of 22k resistors, ironically the exact same value I purchased for your other cartridge, so I'll have these on hand as well for you.

what about one of the (not yet released) Twisted Pear Placid supplies? I believe it will do up to 500mA and looks like a very nice design... and nice and compact as well.
-
I can probably help you out I'll be placing an order at some point this week.

either they just charged up, or they really like the Blue Hawaii =D

probably no one wants a running commentary here, as I've listened to them for all but 1 hour.. but.. they sound kinda "dynamicish", especially in the mid range. Not as much so as the ESP-950 and pretty much opposite of the SR-007. There's a lot of extension and it's reasonably controlled, which is a bit surprising. That's with the KGSS, we'll see what the BH does and it's pretty much built for extra oomph in the last octave or so. Things sound a bit recessed and the sound staging pretty much sucks.. by this I mean the center imaging I'm getting is between my ears, it's not really extending out much "in front of me". The other complaint is they sound a bit slow... attacks don't sound as well defined as they do with the either the SR-007 or ESP-950. Maybe they're just warming up
-
I was expecting that they'd be easier to drive than they are. Volume with my KGSS is ~10% less than the SR-007. I cannot get a good seal at all with them. If I push the cups all the way down towards the floor it's not bad, but I still get leakage at the bottom of my ears, right between my jaw bone and and whatever is not hard that's behind my jaw bone ... deepak?
-
I gots the He and am listening back and forth between my KGSS and BH... will report back later. What bias are they supposed to be played at? Obviously, since there is a Stax adapter they are okay with the Stax bias...
-
are you still looking for a nice volume control? if so, check out the bent audio kits. Those would be probably one the best volume control you can find, the best probably being whatever Charles Hansen is putting in his new preamps

no maybe tomorrow? let's hope...
