I sold my HD650s a little while ago and now I kind of regret it. I'm thinking of picking up another pair of 650s or 6XXs, but there are rumors that the newer ones that are assembled in Romania are somewhat different than the made-in-Ireland sets. However, Sennheiser has stated on the Drop website in this post: They also said in this post: Does anyone have any direct experience comparing older and newer HD650s and/or HD6XXs?

I agree with your assessment about the Utopias and the GL2, catscratch. I'm really enjoying the pairing and I think I'll park here for a while in terms of gear. I ended up buying the Astrodyne a while ago to tide me over until the HeadAmp LPS arrived, and while the Astrodyne is an improvement over the stock switcher, the LPS is much better than the Astrodyne. The Astrodyne smoothed out the edges a bit and improved the bass response, but it sounded kind of compressed and distant, which the LPS completely solves.

Why's that? EQing—whether through hardware or software—is relatively simple. It seems to provide a way to modify the frequency response of headphones that are technically competent but sonically unbalanced. For example, I like many of the attributes of the Koss ESP/95X, but they certainly benefit from a bit of EQ (in my opinion). And I don't use EQ on my Utopias, but that would seem to be a possible solution for many HCers that want to tame their treble and boost the bass a bit.

Also, I just looked in the discussion thread for the Massdrop x Focal Elex and I noticed that some people were complaining about driver failures. One of the employees posted this update recently: This makes me think that some Elex headphones were also wired incorrectly, causing them to have the same reverberation that I was hearing with the Utopias.

Just got my repaired Utopias back—both drivers were replaced and now they sound a bit different than they did before. Previously, they had a strange reverberation to the sound, which was especially noticeable in the bass. I've been in touch with the people I bought them from and apparently some recently manufactured Utopias were wired incorrectly, causing them to have the strange reverberation and making them more likely to fail. I thought that was just the way that Utopias sounded and I got used to it, but I definitely prefer them without that "feature".

Your headphone cable looks familiar! Did you get it from Blue Jeans? I've gotten MSA-1 headphone cables from them for all of my Focals.

I switched the cable so that the right channel was connected to the left driver and vice versa and the right driver was still not producing sound.

... Aaaaand my right driver just died ☹️
