I'd think a combination of airport extreme + airport express would be able to extend you down into the basement in a useable way, or fish a line down from the 2nd floor into the basement to have ethernet down there. You should have a wiring pass through of some sort to make that somewhat doable.

eh, home theater is something I spend a lot of time using, but no time thinking about. I have a solidly midfi home theater, and use it for watching movies. Ok, I relocated my music to a different drive and put it on the listening computer. I spent the last hour listening to alac vs aiff so that amarra would turn itself on and off automatically. What I think I hear is the imaging and clarity is just a touch better with amarra on.

Local storage in that I use itunes sharing, not NAS to access my itunes. The itunes library's primary function is that of video serving for my kids. I then use itunes sharing to listen to the songs on my office computer. When listening that way, amarra reports "itunes" instead of "on", just as if I was using alac.
