I'm not sure why you think the fan running is a concern. As long as the laptop doesn't overheat, there's no risk other than a few decibels of noise. It's an annoyance with open headphones, but that's not really the target market for the duet, and even then, you'll only hear it if there's no actual music playing.

Your mac has spdif IO already, so they didn't include that on the duet. You can have the headphone and speaker outs active independently, tho they use the same DACs, so you cna't assign different channels to them.

My house in alaska was wired for a generator backup to mains. It's fairly simple for an electrician to install that. You definitely don't want to DIY it tho
